MAES On-Line 2020 Convention was disappointing, but it was free, so any expectations of anything better were never met. I did not see the first 5 hours so I hope that was better then the last 5 that I did see. Would love to hear from others who saw the convention in it's entirety. The highlights for me were Marc DeSousa's interludes which were really very good and Scott Alexander's hosting of the evening show which was pretty weak except for his performance of the linking rings, which was terrific (great to see a pro doing a classic and absolutely nailing it) I was amazed at the complete lack of skill displayed in the evening show with the exception of Jeremy Mickelson whose performance was very very good but terribly shot by a single camera placed several rows back in an auditorium resulting in a view that was truly awful and Geno Mazzarella's always skillful performance whose sound was as abysmal as was Jeremy's visual. The rest of the evening show was devoid of any real talent so I will not bother to list the individuals responsible.

Since this was a first time event, I think the overall convention went very well. Sure there were some down sides like the chat line kept appearing in the performance screen but that was quickly taken care of. One thing I thought interesting was at a live convention, there are always a few that carry on conversations in the performance area. This on line convention was no different as there were a few "attendees" that carried on conversations via the chat while performances were in progress so it was distracting just like being there for real.

As for the actual convention, I appreciate so many performers performing free of charge and also appreciate the convention being free for all of us. The only downside in my opinion was that almost all of the acts were card effects. Rather than being the MAES convention, it could have been called card conjurors day. For me, the highlight of the day was the interview with David Copperfield.

Kudos to the tech staff that made this convention possible with almost no glitches. My expectation of the evening show was that we were going to see actual live performances when they were actually pre-recorded and in some cases a bit lame but overall, the day was enjoyable and it was good to "get away" for a day of magic
