I've always done my Ambitious Card Routine in walkaround and table-hopping gigs, but never when on a small stage. I've always felt that people wouldn't see the magic as well. I was talking about this with another magician and he disagreed. I started thinking about this and I guess it can be adapted by changing some of the handling. Also, I think ending the routine with the card in a sealed envelope in the wallet would also play better.
What do you guys think?

As you are already performing the routine close up, I take you already know your answer. You are standing with a group of customers, presenting your card magic. I hope you talking to the spectator, and involving the onlookers as well. That would be how it is presented on a stage, only you would speak louder, and be more descriptive in your patter so everyone knows what is happening at each stage of the effect. If the spectator is reacting and the audience is not, then you need to work on why they are not following the spectator's reactions.
For the finale the card in wallet is a great finish, but you have to have he card signed. So if the card is not signed, then on the last revel of the Ambitious Card, have the person sign the card, do not tip the ending in any way, in other words, something different is about to happen, just continue and let the CIW be a total surprise. Many performers have presented the Card in Wallet in their stand up acts, Patrick Page comes to mind. The nice thing about the envelope is that you can have the spectator open the envelope in some routines with certain wallet, like the LePaul wallet. |

Yes, I am already performing it and I know some of the displaying of the cards needs to be a little different to fit the presentation on the stage. Making sure the audience is fully aware of what's going on is a very good point that I hadn't fully thought about. I'll work on that. I also always do the AC with the spectator signing the card.
I'm going to look up Patrick Page's ACR. I also, just found Pop Haydn's ACR. Although it wasn't exactly performed on a stage, I can see how he makes people in the back see what's going on. Thanks for the help Bill, I really appreciate it.

Pat Page's Card In Wallet was performed by Paul Daniels on British TV here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBR6ZatHbWE
Not an ACR, but a great routine, and visible on stage. You could maybe add a few ACR phases into it? Another option - on a lecture DVD Pat Page also explained his stage "Do as I Do", where both he and a volunteer shuffle halves of the deck, swap top cards and always show "mates". They swap decks part way through the routine. It's a brilliant routine. He suggests two endings, a comedy ending where he throws his deck in the air (the volunteer does the same), and a "magic" ending where he produces two aces, and the volunteer also produces two aces. It's described in various books, also taught by Wayne Dobson (with Pat Page's permission) in one of Wayne's books and lectures, under the title "Continuous Do As I Do". |

I went to Pat Pages website, that his family has maintained for some years now, and found that all of Pat Pages material has been sold. Surprising that they have not kept up with demand.
Some of his material that is on videos is on the L&L publishing website. You can check out what is available there. Your premise of performing ACR and then finishing with the Card to sealed envelope, make a good finale. Remember you have to talk, to the spectator loud enough so the audience can hear, and you have to talk to the audience as well. Close-up magic is not performed silently as you eluded to previously. |

ACR to CTP, to unbelievalope.
If you set up the unbelievalope at the start of show rather than at the start of the trick, hits really hard. |
