As a paranormal investigator, I have worked many sites of purported hauntings. EVPs are in theory a good idea. They are somewhat easy to get; however, they require a lot of cleaning up of background noise and filtering, along with speeding up or slowing down the playback to actually get usable voices.
Dr. Pepper's old illusion of creating an apparition can be useful and startling, if used briefly. It requires quite a bit of setup and adjustment to be effective though. The effect by Phantomas called "Polter" would probably be most appropriate. Let's just say it's a time delay effect and has scared the crud out of everyone I've victimized with it.
