After leaving Frampton’s band in the early 1980’s, I met up with John Phillips to reform the Mamas and The Papas. John’s daughter, Mackenzie Phillips, took Michelle’s Phillips’ place, and due to the hit TV show One Day At A Time, was good friends with Valerie Bertinelli. So when Eddie and Valerie became romantically involved, they used to show up backstage at some of our gigs and make ga-ga eyes at each other from across the room. It was really cheesy in an endearing sort of way.

I had a couple of good conversations with Eddie, and he was extremely kind, describing to me in detail how he managed to get such wonderful sustained feedback from his guitars. He even told me, without reservations, exactly how his guitars were modified! The details of which, unfortunately - (since I’m primarily a keyboard player with guitar as my second instrument) - were way above my head.

RIP, Eddie ... you were one heck of a guitarist!

Legendary. He was a huge part of my rock n roll youth. As was Peter Frampton.

As an aside, it's funny to think that when I used to carry around my huge ghetto blaster radio in the 80s listening to both bands, while getting high with my friends, I was also listening to someone I would end up chatting with on a magic forum almost 40 years later. Small world.

May Eddie rest in peace. He made a huge impact.

Sad news indeed...The first time I heard Eruption, I knew that I was going to dig this band regardless of what played on the next track. Eddie was a pioneer in the world of rock guitar. His music will live forever.

It takes a hell of a talent to craft an unmistakable sound, and there's no mistaking a Van Halen song when it comes on the radio.
I'm sad to see him go and grateful for the music he chose to share with us.
Eff cancer.

I watched a guy cover "Eruption" on the bagpipes.

Interesting stuff about his early piano playing. He must have been insanely talented and his memory must have been great to pull all that off. Makes sense I guess, he was one of the first rockers to really bring the synthesizer mainstream as I recall.
