Like some of the other magicians, I believe that the ambitious card is one of the best card effects... when presented correctly.
The A.C. always clinches clients for me and gets me my big tips when I do restaurant work. But making the signed card jump from the middle to the top 5 times straight is boring unless you put life into the effect and your own personality. If the A.C. is "boring" or is looked at as "uncool", it's the magician's fault. Like Al Goshman said" You are the magic, the tricks only come for the ride"

I'm in league with Jon and geminijg. While AC can be the one we love to hate...we have a moot point until we look at the event through the many different eyes of our guests.
Presentation Notes on AC. Pesky Card...has possibilities if you like mutant magic. Gee...how'd that get there? (Again!) Cream of the Crop...has possibilities for the business audience. We all can be successful if we always do our best...allow me to demonstrate... You're Not Going to Believe This But,...OK you sloshed nonbelievers...we even made it as simple as we could! WTF? The Gauntlet...Simple, schmimple. Nobody here gets out alive. Sign it. Punch a hole through it. Add a ring of fire while you're at it. Thesis: I note four different presentations. There are many more for this one. I say it's best to pick one that suits and RELATES to the guests so that you can communicate something. Something...real...to THEM. What really matters? What we think? Or what our guests are thinking? Anyway...

I, for one, love performing the ACR for spectators. It always gets a very strong reaction, and it is difficult to top.(pun intended) Of course, my routine DOES build, in a logical way, and I even have a great "sucker" bit in the middle that gets a scream, everytime...
On ACR needing a better presentation: WHY? Every spectator I have performed my ACR for have loved it, and the only "presentation" I apply to it is, "Watch closely as I place your signed card into the center of the deck...I just riffle, and snap, and your signed card comes to the top!" , etc... Spectators LOVE this. It is SO direct. I think we, as magicians, tend to over-analyze our routines. We need to remember that laymen don't spend hours upon hours studying or watching magic. It is still "new" to them. Let the effects register, and INTERACT with the audience! Sheesh....this started out as a "satirical" thread... I'll shut up now. |

Hi, this is my first post.I have loved card magic for along time.I was in Scotland a month ago and a young man did ambitious card routine in a train station and got me interested in how it worked. Now I have bought several books and I am learning quite a bit. I love this forum. Mike

Jeff,
I tend to agree with you on the over-analyzation bit. It's true that laymen don't spend the time we do thinking about the concepts. It is fresh to them. This thinking goes along the lines of "no old tricks...just old audiences", a line of reason to which I subscribe. It's the main reasons I still often do ACR and Do as I Do. MW2350, Welcome aboard, Mike! I believe you'll enjoy this forum.

I think Kevin Ram is right... And he is right about this being an old thread...
For a show the ambitious card can be one of the most entertaining effects. The effect is the signed card moves around the deck to the top and bottom... Turns upside doen and switches with other cards and often found in a wallet or deck box... This can look very magicial... But to magicians that know the moves and from seeing so many ambitous card routines. With most of the same moves used and that are based off of Vernon's classic and moves for Expert card tech. For magicians it can be a little boring... Because I feel that this is an effect that a lot of magicians do the same way... I feel that the magicians that don't know how to do an ambitious card routine and would like to learn the effect to check out the classic books..

All sources should be looked at while making the effect your own, but no education would be complete without absorbing Dai Vernon's from Stars Of Magic. Not because "it's Vernon" but he explaine the psychology behind the routine.
Then go to the Tommy Wonder version on the L&L DVD. It's Vernon's with Tommy's touches. Chris

Giobbi has a nice version of the ACR in Vol. 2 (I think) of his Card Colege Series. He also has a good bit of psycology notes on it as well.
An amatuer practices untill he gets it right, a professinal practices untill he can't get it wrong.
Don't wait for oppurtunity to knock, throw open the door, grab it by the throat and drag it inside kicking and screaming. Magically yours |

I am almost constantly amazed by the magicians claim that "this is one of the most entertaining tricks a magician can do for an audiece".
Then when I see the routine it is 9 out of 10 times very long drawn out and boring. Truley as Jonathan said the knack is to reframe the card. After the first time you really are insulting their intelligence. Magicians enjoy the trick because of the number of ways it can be done. The audience does not or should not care how it is done. To them it comes to the top. I always marvel at magicians "selective amnesia" as I call it. They can't stop talking about the audiences who marvel at certain tricks and then when even more are sleeping they seem to forget. I think if this is the most entertaining trick in your bag, then you need to work on more tricks. I am not saying it is bad, but far from "universally the best".

Yes, the Ambitious Card is a truly wonderful effect.
Yes, practically every magician (good or bad) performs the Ambitious Card. Yes, lay audiences around the world love the Ambitious Card, BUT they have also seen it, often several times before. Does this mean the Ambitious Card has become tired, or dare I say it, a card magic cliche? I don't know. But personally I don't perform it anymore. To Ambitious Card or not to Ambitious Card ... that is the question. |

I think the point I'm trying to make is that the AC is one of the mainstays of a magician's arsenal for entertainment/show, even for Daryl. It's what you want to make out of it - lots of room for freestyle and creativity. Personally, I think Daryl's routine in his AC dvd is a little too long and needlessly complicated. Spec wants something more direct and to the point.
