Don't bother to answer if you don't understand the question.

Personal preference. I’ve tried both and I like them without the ridge.

I haven't used a ridged shell, so I can compare, how ever after looking at the excellent illustrations at https://www.3shells.com/
I got the felling that ridged shells just don't look as innocent as wide open shells. The ridge seems to do just what it does, while with the smooth cup, there is just nothing to see.

I have used both types of shell a great deal....so can offer a bit of insight.

The standard shells are kinda self-working. You push the shell and it happens. This makes it a bit easier and somewhat more predictable.

The bottom ridged shells allow you to steal or not steal. They are not quite self-working so you have to decide when and whether you want the pea.

However this gives you the freedom to mix & move the shells as desired. There is not a great deal of written and vid instructions out there so it will take a bit more work to figure out their potential. This may or may not be worth your time and effort depending how serious you are.

I use both professionally depending what I want to do. If I want to keep it pretty simple, I'll use the standard shells. I still can do some pretty advanced sequences with them.

However if I'm doing an event in that I want more possible sequences and there will be people who might know how the standard shell/pea works. Perhaps a charity casino nite where I'll be playing all nite. Then I'll grab the bottom ridge.

You mentioned a concern about the Ridged Shells not looking innocent. I almost always have the shells examined and have never had anyone question them.

To give you an idea how difficult it is to follow the pea:

I've always thought ridged shells look suspicious and man made. I'd much rather just use a hard pea to trick someone if I wanted the illusion of fairness.

I'll jump in here, as the link Zaubie posted is of yours truly Smile
(P.S. There's a lot of moves going on with that than just the Bottom Ridge.)

Here is a quick demo I just did today of the possibilities of doing a mix with the Bottom-Ridge vs Standard.
This is a one-hand mix known as 'One arm Charlie'

As you can see, the Bottom Ridge offers possibilities.

I use both, and in no way would I say one is superior to the other.

For reference and ideas, check it out:
