There is a two DVD set entitled "Grand Illusions, The Story of Magic" available from various magic dealers, Amazon.com, etc.
Also, both Public Broadcasting System and A & E cable channels had series that were available on video at one time. You might try their web sites to see if they are still in stock. I do not have the DVD set but did watch the PBS and A & E presentations quite some time ago. Both were very good. |

My opinion: there's no best book out there, but if you get Christopher's Illustrated History of Magic, Dawes' The Great Illusionists, Price's Magic A Pictorial History, and Clarke's Annals of Conjuring, you have a very good selection of general history books. There are a few others, but the foregoing are all very very good. Clay

I certainly agree with Clay's choices and would also add "Conjuring" written by James Randi (St, Martin's Press) and the hardbound companion book to the PBS series entitled "The Art of Magic" by Carl Walden and Joe Layden with Jamy Ian Swiss (General Publishing Group, Inc).

Between Clay and Woofledust, there is a good selection on magic history. With choices to fit just about any wallet.

And, if you are looking for a book which provides 138 titles covering magic history, biography, and bibligraphy, then my book, Historians' Guide to Conjuring, would be useful (shameless plug).
I am working on a second edition which will be greatly enlarged and revised, covering at least 1,500 entries and will probably be well over 1,000 pages when finished (another shameless plug...). The first instalment of the second edition will be out in July, will be 92 pages in length, including 12 pages of full color plates, and will cost about $48 postpaid. In it, among other things, will be a thorough discussion of the works of Edwin A. Dawes, with information nobody has ever seen before, together with color reproductions of his works and the indices of his works. In addition, I have written an 18 page preface which canvasses this literature and provides references to over 125 titles to whet the appetite of the historian, together with reproductions of title pages from some of these books (the last shameless plug). Why the plug? I'm publishing it myself, have spent a lot of money doing so, and am shaking in my boots, hoping it meets with a good response from the collecting and historical groups of folks!gronreceives quaking |

BKentner:
Thanks for the kind words. I returned your PM. Anybody else interested should PM me and I will provide my e-mail address. Price will not be finalized until the revised printer's quote is received, but it should not exceed $48. If you e-mail me after receiving my response to your PM, I will let you know price, address, etc. One final thing: only 200 copies will be printed. |
