I stumbled upon an old thread about riddles and noticed that some of my favorites weren't on it, so here goes.
1. A man is pushing his car and stops at a hotel. The instant he stops, he knows he is broke. Why? 2. Why are 2003 pennies worth more than 1963 pennies? 3. A man is looking at a message on a piece of paper. The message is in english. The man speaks english yet he cannot read the message. Why? 4. What are the chances that the next heavyweight champion of the world will have more then the average number of arms? These last two are absolutely true. 5. My dad has married several women over the years. None of them has died and he has never been divorced yet he is not a bigamist. How? 6. I have two friends, Julie and Jane. They were both born to the same mother and father within an hour of each other yet they are not twins. I'll eliminate some common guesses about the last one. Julie and Jane are human, they are not adopted and they were not born in different years. They were naturally born to the same woman within the same 60 minute period. There is actually a very logical reasonable non-trick answer. |

2. Because 2003 pennies is a bigger amt of money than 1963.2003 makes $20.03, and it's more than $19.63
3. He can't READ english. 5. He's a minister. 6. The mother and father weren't theirs but their doctors. Ellen |

Ellen: Good job on 2 and 5! As for #3, the man CAN read English. Rereading the riddle, it looks like you may have got me on a technicality due to my sloppy wording, however there is another logical answer. As for #6, the mother and father are Julie and Jane's natural mother and father and neither of them are doctors.
abc, I gotta give you a little time to stew first. I'll post the answers in a day or two. Sorry wrong answer for #4. For everyone else, the man in #3 can speak and READ english but he still can't read the message. |

Salsa_dancer - Sorry, #3 is wrong but you nailed 1 and 6. Way to go! A lot of people get mad at me when I give them the triplets answer. I think most people are expecting a more contrived answer.

#3: The message is written in invisible ink.
#4: 100% (or near as). No living human has more than two arms, but some have less, putting the average number of arms at very slighty less than two. The next heavyweight champion will likely have two arms. |

HelenHeld - You're answer for #4 is dead on. Way to go! Wrong on #3 but you're close.

Well, nobody has #3 quite right yet, so here are my guesses:
a) the paper is upside down b) the man is blind |

I thought he was blind too and needed it to be written in Braille to read it.
But then again I thought, "What if it's written in Old English? Greg

OK, you guys have pretty much gotten it, so I'll fill in the blanks. Remember, the riddle says, "the man is LOOKING at the message" so he isn't blind.
Answer: Greg Arce pretty much got it - the message is in Braille. The man can't read it because he ISN'T blind and doesn't know braille. On an overall note, I really thought it would take all you guys a lot longer to answer these than it did. I guess I underestimated the intelligence in this group. |

Yes, #3 was a bit ambiguous. I always like riddles though, thanks for posting them.

Why are 2003 pennies worth more than 1963 pennies?
1963 penies are no longer legal tender and are part of the old LSD system (pre-Decimal) Paula

Here is a riddle that was asked of me during a job interview. Good Luck
A man is in a room containing three light switches marked A,B,C. There is nothing else in the room. The room next door contains three lamps plugged into three different receptacles marked X,Y,Z. The man can do what he likes to the three switches and then enter the room with the three lamps and say difinitively which lamp is operated by which switch. How is this possible. He can only enter each room once and the lamps are not visible from the room with the switches. Questions anyone?
He who laughs, lasts.

Hi
Yes Lsd is a drug but also latin for our (British) old money system Pounds shillings and pence. Lsd - the L coming from the latin word libra, the d coming from the latin word denarius (a roman coin). 240 pennies = one pound 12 penies = Shilling 20 shilling = one pound 5 shilling = crown farthling = 1/4 penny Florin = two shillings More info here :- http://home.clara.net/brianp/money.html Paula Paula
