My name is Mark-Andrew, but everyone forgets and calls me Mark, so I went with my 'day job' username.
I'm about to be 46. Got my start as a 8 year old or so with the Blackstone Magic Kit (deluxe version ) for Christmas. I spent about 5 minutes with each gimmicked trick, then picked up the cards and haven't put them down since. I'm a little odd, I believe, in that I've never watched a magic DVD or video, other than performances. Due to inclination and past circumstances I've learned all my sleights from the printed pages. (I had the Antinomy DVDs sent to my cousin who is also hugely into card magic, for example.) I enjoy most 'good' magic, but cards are my happy place. I like the term 'card mechanic', and those are the people and sleights I've spent most of my time with. (I'm that person who worked their way through every move in Marlo's Revolutionary Card Technique ) With too many to list as the literature is so deep, a few of the magicians names that come to mind immediately: Giobbi for CC; Racherbaumer for thoughts and explorations, as in The Artful Ledger; Lavand for giving me the tools to be a better one-handed card sharp while opening a whole new world; Lorayne for putting more magic in a single book than my poor self could afford any other way; Ortiz for attempted melding of 'the real work' with magic; Tamirez for pointing out that the magic happens because of attention to the in between moments; and always Erdnase. These aren't the only things these magicians meant to me, but some of the things I've taken from them. There's a huge community I have a great debt to for the amount of happiness and pure joy I've had throughout my lifetime. Many of them are here, so after lurking around for over a decade I figured it's time to jump in and let them know.

I have always used the Magic Café as my source of information as well! However, not for the full decade like you. I can already tell from your original post that you will have some great (and polite) insight! Looking forward to reading more of it.
