If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I do understand but also feel that’s sometimes a shallow judge of quality. I have often said that applause is currency but it’s value is not as much to the performer as it is to the buyer. That applause and standing ovations are a confirmation that the buyer did well in booking you. My judgment is based more on the audience’s reactions of a more subtle nature. When I finish an effect and can look and see them bewildered to the point of not being able to form words, that tells me more than applause does. On the other hand, as a rough barometer, I have always recommended for magicians to listen to the audio of their act to hear the audience reactions (not simply the applause) to get a better idea of what is working and what isn’t. It is a tool that should be combined with the input of all of your other senses during a performance to guide you. I have always felt that the reason I want an effect to be so well rehearsed ad polished is so I can focus on the audience during the show... to be able to listen. They tell me everything about becoming better in the service of creating amazement for them... that is my ultimate goal.

Applause is not a gauge of much really. An audience can, and usually IS manipulated into applause. Heck they go in figuring that is the reaction they should have.
There are SO many better ways to judge "reaction", especially in magic. I am not always wanting applause. Sometimes you need a quiet moment in the show. Often you need just an ooo ahh effect or a groaner or what not. Applause is simply one metric used to gauge an audiences approval. Also it depends upon WHICH audience. Often those at corporate gatherings are not as free with their emotions as they are at a function which perception matters. At a place where you may not be the reason they are there primarily (Cruise ships or resorts for example.) the audience may just be not interested in applauding but are still enjoying anyhow. Applause is superficial, and addictive and not a great gauge of much for an actual performer.

As an amateur I love amusing the company to any degree; to me, a mere giggle is a success.

Tommy as a PROFESSIONAL, yes you are dead on! No joke brother. I mean you are "going for" that reaction. A "mere giggle" when that is what is intended is total success.
It is about what you are looking for, and what you end up getting.

Measuring an audience
Audience responses can be measured by researching: Viewing and listening figures for TV and Radio programmes Box office takings for films Newspaper and magazine sales Website hits Followers and shares on platforms like Twitter or Facebook Ratings and subscriptions to YouTube channels Every week the Broadcasting Audience Research Board (BARB) release statistics that show the top ten most popular programmes on each TV channel. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zg24frd/revision/2 Quite and an interesting little piece actually; Who one is with can affect the way one responds.

It was obvious to anyone listening that he bombed hard. The only solution was he had to posses "laughing ears". There is another problem that is tough to point out. It is the fact that magic itself will get SOME sort of reaction. To take credit for a reaction inherent in the medium is disingenuous. If you are not doing your own material are YOU really the one getting the applause? I don't know the answer, it is just a question.

It is certainly difficult to measure the atmosphere because it is constantly changing and so it might be better to measure what is on the ground. As I recall a well-known magician said something similar but at the moment I cannot recall what he said exactly or his name.
