I am thinking of getting Cube On Release which uses two ropes. I am wondering whether the principle of this prop is the same as Houdini Block Escape which uses only one rope.

Without going into exposure of either effect, in both cases, the block can be examined. The rope is then threaded through the block which is placed on the stand. The top frame is put in place and the block penetrates the rope. At this point, things change. With Cuban release, the effect ends there but with the Houdini Block, the frame can be disassembled and the rope removed. Both effects are visually the same but the method is different.
The Houdini Block is smaller than the Cuban Block. Personally, I use the Cuban Release in all my shows and presents very well.

We always used Neil Foster's presentation of The Cuban/Cube-On Release. This differs somewhat from the original Hughes version in that there is no advance preparation and the cords and block are clean as a whistle both at the beginning and at the end.

I don't know, but I would imagine Abbott's might be a good resource for a referral. I mention this because they supplied his written routine with the original purchase. I don't know if they still do.

Neil Foster demonstrated the effect for me at the Abbott's Showroom. He did not do any actual routine with patter lines. He did it silent.
He just placed the ropes though and while in the stand. He slowly pushed the block through toward the front or audience. then took ahold of the block with a hand on both side of the front of the cube and pulled it forward. When the cube was removed you could see the 2 ropes still showing across the opening where the cube was. The end. he did not remove the ropes from the frame. The gimmick was a surprise to me, and seeing the ropes still in the frame was somewhat of a shock to me. IT is a large prop, and thus needs large container to haul to shows. The cube and stand are all black with silver painted accents. |

Bill, I had the Hughes item made by Abbotts and used the Neil Foster working. I think the demonstration that Neil did for you adds a lot. Although Neil's method was part of the instructions, it was not the same as the demonstration method. Pushing the block in while threaded adds a lot.

Bill, it isn't that big. I've owned and do own several and the cube itself is only 5" square. The original may have been black but for years they have been red with with either a black or gold accent on each side. The stand is black with a gold trim and when disassembled it's pretty compact. As Julie mentioned above, it is possible to remove the ropes after the penetration but it's not necessary. Seeing the rope across the center of the frame is quite impressive.

Another bit of info: Worth (I don't know if Milson-Worth ever did) sold a deluxe version of the Hughes' apparatus called ROYAL BLOCK RELEASE. This is finished in their classic green & gold color scheme with complimentary brass colored hardware.
It also has an added self-working mechanical feature that makes the effect even more baffling to watchers. Now you know "the rest of the story". Julie |

I notice a couple of videos online performing the Cuban/Cube-On Release, they do not remove the ropes from the frame. But as for Houdini Escape Block, all of them (as seen from videos), remove the rope. Any difference there?

It's all in the handling. As previously mentioned, it is possible to remove the ropes on the Cuban Release but you have to ask yourself why you would need to do this. The effect of having the block release or penetrate through the ropes and showing the rope still in the frame where the block was has all the impact that is necessary.
As a side note, where are you planning on buying the Cuban Release? Abbott's discontinued awhile ago and I could be wrong but I don't think they've revived it.

There is an old Cuban Release in a magic store where I live. I am not too sure it's Abbott, but I know it uses two ropes.

If it's an abbott's, the block will be red with either black or gold accent on each side. Regardless of the maker, it operates the same.

One of the smaller online auctions just starting yesterday or today has a Cuban release-type apparatus pictured for sale that has a different color scheme. Most likely, it is NOT an Abbott or Hughes item.
IMO the problem with the Houdini Block is that it works exactly as an observant spectator thinks it does... Julie |

Not to argue but, I cannot see how a spectator would imagine the method used in the Houdini Block Escape.
A layman is not typically in the know of such things but, if not performed well, then they may get a peek. |

For effect demonstration only, here are a couple of Cuban Block Release performances followed by the Houdini Block.
