Does anyone do Vernon's Non-Stacking cup and ball routine? I admit that for about fifty years I looked at the newspaper cover glasses and immediately turned the page, The paper rapped tumblers have nothing to do with the routine and can be replaced with any kind of containers you have three of. Stop doing the same Gazzo/Vernon act everyone does and show some originality.

No, I don't but... Show originality by doing Vernon's other cups and balls routine? Wouldn't that be equally unoriginal?
Maybe it would be less common, to mimic something less mimicked. C&B doesn't require a stack, and most cups would work, literally any cup if you want to modify it or your routine to fit it. I like my JP's too much, but to each their own. I only use 2 cups, no chop, and I don't wear a hat... but I would sincerely doubt I'm original. I learned the sleights and moves from other magicians after all.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Doing a routine that most everyone has skipped over is not quite the same as doing an act that you see on every street corer.

I think the point Josh is making is that original is an absolute state. Just because one might choose to do something that "less" people happen to be doing, it does not make it more original.
I get your point, and it is THE THING in the performance of magic that I dislike the most. It goes throughout all of magic and not just the cups.
