What a tremendous loss. Like so many of us, I grew up watching Mark. Magic land of Alakazam started my Saturday every week. Meeting Mark and Nani several times was a highlight. He'll be greatly missed.

Really saddened to hear! Mark Wilson's Complete Course on Magic will always be an invaluable resource keeping his legacy alive.
As someone who lived out in Asia for quite some time, I was always fascinated and inspired by Mark and Nani's history of bringing western magic to the east. RIP! |

One of my favourite memories of Mark Wilson was at a small magic convention in 1997 in LA. We went to Wizardz at Universal Citywalk, which was a Dinner & Magic Show. One of the performers at the time was Greg Wilson (Mark & Nani’s son). He did an illusion called Excalibur. He’s trapped in a plexiglass box with swords and does a substitution type of escape. In the show for our group (& some of the public), Mark Wilson ended up appearing in the box at the end, and Greg re-appeared elsewhere in the theatre. I’m sure that was a special twist just for us, because Mark & Nani were also lecturing to our group during the convention.

Mark was basically a father figure to me, since I didn't have a father of my own. Greg (Mark's youngest son) calls me his sister. Mike (his oldest) is currently staying in my motorhome so he can take care of Nani. I'm pretty gutted. I feel fortunate to have known Mark. To have taught magic classes with him at the Magic Castle. To have shared my birthdays with him and Greg and Nani (we're all Aries). And to have seen his commitment to family. I learned every trick in the Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic, and taught some of them to new magicians. I still have a variant of one of Mark's tricks in my show.
Donald, that trick you saw at Universal Citywalk is the same trick Greg did on Fool Us, and both Mark and Nani appeared at the end. The magic world has lost another legend, and I am very sad at this one. This one hit close to home.

Very sad news indeed. I can't imagine there is any magician who has not been influenced by Mark Wilson in some form or another, be it through knowing him, seeing him perform or simply by having one of his books.

Mark was actually in the box once they had removed the swords. But keep in mind that this was a few years before Greg / Mark / Nani's appearance on Penn and Teller. I've seen many performances of that illusion over the years. Murray Hatfield also performs the Excalibur Illusion. - Donald

This is very sad to me. We all know death is inevitable and Mark lived a long life, but it is nonetheless sad to see him go. Every magician was inspired by another magician in a manner to give him the impetus to begin his or her magical journey. Mark was my inspiration. A buddy of mine and I watched every episode we could of The Magic Land of Allakazam. It inspired us both. I feel fortunate to have met Mark twice and I took advantage of the opportunity to tell him how much of an influence he had on my life. I lived in Dallas when he performed there before moving to California. I actually called his phone number to ask if I could buy his Tambor which he had just performed on his local TV show. Nani answered the phone and explained so nicely to this punk kid that Mark liked to keep the things he did on TV even though he couldn't perform them a second time. Of course, he performed Tambor again on TMLoA, a different albeit national venue. The point is Nani was so nice to me even though I interrupted her day with a stupid question. I met her too at a convention and had the opportunity to tell her this story.
I saw Mark and Nani (and Rebo RIP) perform at the TAOM in 1959 and attended a lecture from Mark. He was just a very nice person. I thank him and Nani for bringing so much happiness into the world. |

I can't even begin to express how sad this news makes me feel. Like so many others, I became aware of magic through The Magic Land of Allakazam every Saturday morning. Throughout the years, I stayed with magic, and although I'm not a professional, without magic in my life I don't believe I would have gone as far as I have. Truly, I owe great debt to Mark, Nani, and Rebo and the entire Allakazam team. Condolences to Nani, Mike, and Greg. Mark Wilson, RIP.

Watching Mark Wilson on TV as a kid was really something special. Where else could you see magic and illusions in those days. And also Bev "Rebo the Clown" Bergeron. I learned Matrix from watching Mark's son Greg do it on the show. Mark also did sleight-of-hand tricks with thimbles, egg and silk, etc. We are losing some big names right-and-left. One didn't realize how good Mark was until you saw other people try to do illusions that did them badly, for a while, before magic got better again years later...maybe until Doug Henning. I'm talking about the larger tricks. Anyway...again, more loss. As David Roth always used to say to me, when someone big died..."We're next!".

A tremendous loss. He was my friend and mentor. He was the person who got me into magic, way back in the 50's when I was a very young child and he and Nani were doing Time for Magic on TV in Dallas. He always brought joy and happiness to the hearts of his audience, and he somehow managed to take his own family, Nani, Mike, Greg and himself and make every one who left his performance feel that they were now a part of that magical family as well. Nani, Greg, and Mike, my prayers and thoughts are with you. The loss I feel is great, but I am sure the loss you are experiencing is far greater than any of us can fully understand. Thanks for sharing your husband and father with us. He gave all of us so many years of "Happy Magic". May his memory be eternal.

While I did not know him, I feel like I did somehow, through his Complete Course, his interviews, footage, etc. We have lost so many greats over the past year or so. He’ll be missed.

I was heartbroken to hear of Mark's death on Greg's Facebook page. I've met him on a few occasions and was impressed with how nice of a guy he was. Like many other young magicians in the 1970s and '80s, I semi-idolized Mark and devoured his book. One question, though: Is anyone else surprised and disappointed that apparently not even one major news outlet announced his passing? The man's influence on magicians and the magic industry as a whole was significant, to say the very least. RIP, Mark.

I join all fellow magicians worldwide who mourn his loss. Even in his old age, he taught magic at a high school in the Los Angeles (Redondo Beach) area. We will miss you, Mark Wilson, with deepest condolences to his family. Lynn

I happened to meet him at the Castle two years ago. A friend of mine was performing in the close up room, and as he was giving me his own "tour" as it were, a man in a wheelchair was coming the other way.
My friend goes, "did you happen to notice who that was?" "No," I said. "Mark Wilson." I immediately vaporized, and caught up to him (Nani was pushing the chair). I got to shake his hand and thank him for the giant mark on my childhood. He was so gracious and happy. Heck, he was THERE TO SEE MAGIC--just like a kid. He truly loved it. I felt honored to get a handshake, and a lovely smile from Nani. And I'm thankful my friend pointed him out to me. |
