I am glad and just want to present you my new effect of Mentalism: it can be done also in a remote video chat or on the phone,
requiring just few cards, and it's very easy and funny to perform,
although it seems inexplicable to people because you will NEVER see the cards!.

Available as a pdf Ebook in English language on Penguin Magic:
https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/14929
and also in Italian language on Lybrary:
https://www.lybrary.com/remote-estimate-......091.html

Here two live uncutted performances of this effect, both in English and Italian:

I really hope you will like it Smile

Full disclosure: The inventor of this effect, my friend Biagio Fasano (B. Magic), kindly sent me a complimentary review copy of R.E.A.C.T. which comes as a 14-page downloadable PDF.

Effect

The spectator selects ANY four playing cards, and mentally selects one. She then turns some cards face-up and some face-down (this can be truly random) and deals them in a row. The performer does not need to know (or see) the four cards.

The spectator then decides whether to tell the truth or to lie to your question: "Can you see the face of your card?". The cards are then mixed, face-up and face-down, following a simple procedure, and dealt again. The question is then repeated and the spectator continues to either lie or tell the truth. This procedure is then repeated one final time.

After this, the performer tells the spectator which card to pick up - and it proves to be the selected card!

Positives

1. Completely hands-off and self-working.

2. It can be performed over the phone, on Zoom, etc.

3. The performer does not see the cards at any time!

4. It works 100% of the time.

5. Two alternative methods are taught. One of these is very easy. I find the second slightly more difficult, though other performers may prefer it.

6. Full and clear explanation of the underlying principle which is new to me (though it has roots in previous methods).

7. The method is ingenious, very deceptive, and almost impossible to backtrack. Martin Gardner would have loved this!

8. The PDF describes an alternative presentation which uses blank cards on which the spectator can write names etc. Business cards could also be used.

9. Other presentations and extensions of the principle are possible.

Negatives

Like many similar effects, the spectator must follow the mixing and dealing procedure exactly or the effect will not work. The procedure is simple enough, but I would prefer to demonstrate it to the spectator a couple of times beforehand to make sure it is understood.

Overall, I really like this. Congratulations, Biagio, on a fine effect and for discovering a fascinating principle.

Doesn't the process of flipping the cards like this seem unmotivated? And make it fairly obvious what principles are involved? I guess perhaps I'm missing something?

First of all thanks to Pegasus and adiabaticman for their kind words about my R.E.A.C.T.,
and a really big thank you to Michael Daniels for his incredibly detailed review: when you simply write "Martin Gardner would have loved this!" you really make me so proud about my work. Thank again, I have nothing else to add: you have really grasped one by one all the crucial points of my effect!!.

And now I would try to answer to no2ss: I don't think my way to ask flipping the cards could seem unmotivated to viewers just vecause they started mixing randomly cards face up and face down, and I motivate that strange shuffle needing to modify "randomly" both position and versus of all 4 cards. I ensure you with my experience there is no apparent principle involved to the view of any spectator. Obviously if you are a magician or a careful mathematic you could think something like that, but remember this few crucial thing, in my opinion:
1) as far as I know, it is a new principle unexplored until now (I am still now exploring this and creating new mentalistic effect based upon it next to publication);
2) as magicians, we could think the same everytime we see a performer doing a faro shuffle in any card effect, or just ask to distribute cards into 2 piles (antifaro!) but no other spectator could think to a principle just seeing thing like these;
3) the strongest part that the spectator remember at the end of R.E.A.C.T. is that he/she was COMPLETELY FREE TO DECIDE TO TELL TRUTH OR LIE and the mentalist REALLY have no way to know it, just as he NEVER SEE the cards.

I really hope this will help, but please feel free to express any concerns.

Please let me be proud to share here what other italian magicians and mentalists said about "R.E.A.C.T." till now:

"... I must say that you did a great job, very nice also from the graphic point of view ... It reminds me of the times I have read Martin Gardner's books ... Bravo, I congratulate you!"
Pino Rolle, Rector and Professor of Magic Art, Vice President of “Circolo Amici della Magia” in Turin

"... The continuous production from Biagio’s fervent mind has in recent days created an unpublished effect of mentalism more than suitable for remote performance ... The true magical strength of this effect ... is evident in considering) that the deck of cards is own by the spectator, who can still be very far from the magician, in a completely different place. A key feature for an effect to be truly magical in the eyes of the public is its "simplicity": it must be understandable by the viewer (as opposed to the trick that allows it to be performed!) … And this effect is exemplary in this sense, not only including these aspects, but all that true Magic requires to amaze and astonish the viewer's mind ...”
Paolo Demartini, Magician and Reviewer on www.Prestigiazione.it

“… A collective reflection flourished in your beautiful work! Congrats.”
Mariano Tomatis, Mentalist and Wonder Injector.

I don't want to say too much about actual method.

But, as far as the "flipping," possibly tipping a principle...

I handle that by saying, "In the beginning I gave you the opportunity to mix some cards face up and face down, now it's my turn."

... and we're off to the races.

Remember, as far they are concerned, you don't know whether they are lying or telling the truth, nor do you have any idea where their card is located.

I have found this to be baffling every time it's performed.

Sounds like an effect Leo Boudreau would like.
I haven't purchased this (yet) but I doubt that the principle is as new as you think it is.

BTW: I really love the accent. Reminds me of Aldo Colombini.

First, I would like to note that I received the manuscript for a review from the author. Biagio Fasano is in the magic community of Italy well known for his "Magie in Quarantena".

However, I have written this review based on all aspects' of the linked videos, which show enough details for me and leave no questions unanswered:
- It is hard to add anything to the comments of previous writers. I agree.
- I classified the routine as a typical "Werner Miller"-routine, who created many "flipping-over & rolling" routines. A bit of "Leo Boudreau" was "crossed in" for this purpose.
- Nevertheless, the routine is an original creation.

Things I added after reading the manuscript:

Pros:
- The booklet is written in great detail and left no questions.
- Werner Miller and Leo Boudreau are cited as an inspiration.
- The trick is usable for a demonstration at a distance.
- The liar-truthteller plot as a mental theme.

Cons:
- It is intended to be shown as a mental routine but is not demonstrated mentally enough and appears as a card trick.
- Playing cards are used. (However, the use of cardboard sheets is also recommended).
- The trick principle should be disguised by additional layers. This is IMHO not yet successfully done.
- The rationale for “wrapping.”

To discuss:
- More attention should be paid to the requirements of the new distance media in a second edition! (Acting in front of a camera. How to give clear instructions, demonstration of actions, what objects can be used, what does the spectator do, what does the performer do, how to present the finale, etc.)
- What about possible use of other flat objects instead of playing cards, e.g., books, money cards, letters, postcards, DVDs, etc., the spectator must have them at home?
- What about asking the spectator in each tour whether the location of the object changed? He should answer ONLY in his mind according to his role. Only after that question, ask about the card’s face side. This way, the performer better conditions the spectator to his position. After the ending of the last tour, the performer asks for a loud answer for a change of place - and as a kicker - you know if the spectator is lying or telling the truth.

One should discuss whether it would not be more advantageous if the performer shows the cards to the spectator? The spectator only watches and answers.

The trick action does not happen to the spectator but the performer. What are the advantages, what are the disadvantages of the two alternatives?

What would you prefer? Why?

I feel compelled to thank a few people for the last comments:
- To Oscar999: thanks a lot for your kind words, as a married magician I agree, to pass "the wife test" is very hard for an effect Smile. Thanls also for your suggestions, I will take them in consideration for a next revision.
- To Bartelli: seeing Leo Boudreau and Aldo Colombini quoted at the same time in your comments and impressions about me, made my day! Thanls a lot And last but not least!:
to hcs: I really have not enough words to thank you, Dr.! You take so much of your time examining in every detail my work, writing such kind words about it and, most of all, giving useful criticism and so many suggestions. and launching also so good and clever discussion points!
I will take all of them in great consideration, thank you again! I am glad and proud to confess you that I think the most of your requests and advices will already find satisfaction in my next ebook: "The INUSUAL....EFFECTS", being translated from Italian to English just in these days...

Just punlished on Lybrary a completely revised and updated versio of my work, both in English and italian, called R.E.A.C.T. RELOADED.
- New layout, qualitatively better and clearer tables and illustrations and above all, new unpublished contentS, thanks to the suggestions of the various Magician friends who have read the first edition:
- Among the news, the mentalist, while knowing at the end only the position of the chosen card, through the use of subtle verbal tricks, will make the spectators feel the clear impression that everything is known to him: the verse of the card and if spectator has decided to lie or not!
- Another possible effect and some alternative ideas are described with different objects (chocolate bars!).

I love the reloaded version, the updated version of Biagio's R.E.A.C.T.

He has wholly improved the layout and the quality of pictures and tables. I wish I can design so!
Biagio has included fresh ideas he received.

My favorite is the Miller version with chocolate bars! Clever idea, I eat the chocolate inside, getting the material for a fantastic trick. This is called a win-win situation!

I really like the principle!
Just thinking... What would a real mindreader do? He would name the card, not just say "take the third card".

I just wonder what could be done with a s** deck... The spectator cuts the deck at any position and takes the next four cards. The magician takes back the rest of the deck (simply because it is not needed anymore). It should be clear what has to be done in order to be able to tell the card, its position and whether the spectator lied or told the truth.

Thanks @saxonia, the idea to use a s** deck opens many other interesting possibilities, but regarding being "be able to tell the card, its position and whether the spectator lied or told the truth.", I suggest to take a look at my new e-Book "The UNUSUAL... SUSPECTS", a sort of "R.E.A.C.T. V 2.0", where the mentalist can do all you required!!.
