Im a newbie to flash paper, and was wondering - is it safe to light a ball of flash paper in the hand?
This may be a laughable question to experts, but I ask that I don't get bullied in the Café toilets. all help would be appreciated. |

While attempting to produce a publicity photo (found in the photo gallery of my website and labeled "Ain't He Young") I posed for twenty (20) pictures where I had a small wad of flaspaper ignited on my palm. I ended up with 1. yellow marks on my hand, 2. a few blisters, and 3. Twenty unusable pictures because I'm wincing with pain.
The photo we ended up using was with Zanadu's flame-o. So the answer to your question is, yes you can light flash paper on your hand, but it's best to gently toss it into the air before the flame touches your hand to keep from being burned. Of course you can let the flame touch your hand if you want, Mark Twain said: "If a man wants to carry the cat home by the tail, I say "Let him!" He's learning a lesson that won't grow dim or doubtful... it's not easy being excentric."

I do this all the time. Just get the palm of your hand a little bit wet and go for it! it might be a little bit hot so you might want to through it up a little bit but you should be ok. if you do it over and over it think you will probably get blisters as Miracle Man show said. just be careful

It depends how big the ball is a small piece doesn't really hurt (Watch out David I can see somebody about to put your head down the toilet!)

If you have a reasonably small piece of flashpaper, either between your fingers or on your hand, and you ignite it, you will feel a small burning sensation, but it causes no real damage, and it goes away almmost instantly. You could think of it as picking up a really hot piece of bread, for half a second. Just don't go lighting baseball (or even marble!) sized pieces.

Ok this is getting close to being over the line in terms of safety (read the rules for this section).
It is foolish to think that fire, even the seemingly instantaneous burn of flash products doesn’t burn. Fire burns, no ifs, no ands, and no buts! Fire burns. Flash products can and will burn you when they come into contact with bare skin. Most routines call for the ignition of the flash product as it is being tossed away so that there is a flash of fire in the air. Other routines use the accessory known as a “Finger Flasher” or “Finger Flash Pot”. These devices have cups that hold the flash product so that the skin is protected. It is never a good idea to hold a burning product in the bare hand!

I've lit flash paper in my hands before, and as young as I am I can tell you it does not burn too much. It's just a slight feeling but it passes by very quickly. Good luck!

Whether or not flash paper in the hand burns depends on a number of issues, including how hard you are holding onto the paper, how much paper you use, etc.
Use good sense and be prepared for the worse (cold water on a burn immediately after incurred can help reduce the pain and damage) because even if it doesn't happen this time.... It can happen at any time. Fire is fire. And no fire is always completely safe under all conditions. BroDavid

The question has to be asked "WHY" do you want to light flash paper in your hand ? There are very good flash gimmicks out there to give good effect without the pain issue. Saying that I was using my finger flasher in my last show and as I flicked the flint the whole thing rotated around my finger and I had a lovely burn on three of my fingers !! BE SAFE !!!

If you want an effect of fire burning from your hand. get "Fire Palms." you light a match that is thrown into your hand and a big flame comes out of your and stays for a long time. not really and chance of being burned on this one because the fire never comes in direct contact with your hand. it is made by alex lourido who did osmosis and buttercoin

Ora as you can see in my avatar, I have fire in both hands! This was done with Dave Powell's Omega fire and while waiting for the photographer to get his camera just right, even though the Omega Fire has (in my opinion) the best heat sinks to keep you from getting burned, it got very (read that: uncomfortably hot) hot a couple of times, and we had to stop the photo shoot to let my hands and the gimmicks cool down.
In performance, I simply show the fire, and as soon as it sinks in to the specs, I kill it, and ditch the gimmicks. There is no need for fire to burn long to have a dramatic effect. BroDavid

I would never lite this stuff in my hands. Its magic. It is suppose to look dangerous(wink wink) but we know it isn't. If it is dangerous don't do it!!! There are a million tricks you could perform why do one where you will get burned????

I do a puff of fire in my hands by barely holding the edge of a piece of flash paper between my fingers, palm facing me and paper extending back behind my hand, hidden from the front. Gesturing over a candle lites it and I let go.
Ok I am nuts, but being a ***ed soul what's a little flame in comparison. Don't do this if you don't want to be burned, because you will be.

David,
I think the real question is why do you want flash paper in your hand? Don't even think about it, I have magician freind that did it in his hand as a joke and ended up with 3rd degree burns! The peice was only the size of a marble and his hand was open. So please don't even try doing in your hand. Instead lit a small peice throw it in th air and catch a ball or a coin. Just don't do it in your hand!!!!!

The reason I do light small (flash pad size) of paper in my hand is for the final presentation of pyro perception. Fire is supposed to hurt, and burn a blister into your fingers in the shape of the card written on the paper.
You can do it, but as is said before this isn't the safest thing to do (but then again neither is eating fire which is discussed here all the time). Here are some tips. Use ONLY NEW paper that is completely dry. The older it is the slower it burns. DO NOT wad it up tightly, the tighter it is the slower it burns. DO NOT "hold" the paper, the less skin contact the better, let it sit on your palm or better yet (my method) hold it lightly between the thumb and forefinger and let go as soon as you see it is starting to ignite. |

I held it in my hand. Yes, it hurts, but not THAT bad. Here's an idea. Vanish a coin. Bring out a piece of flash paper. Crumple the paper with the coin secretly being placed inside the wad. Light it and toss it up into the air. When the fire burns out, the coin will appear to drop out of flame. Some practice on the timing is required. Let me know if anyone tries it.

I do that all the time with my flash pads. Sometimes, once it ignites, I drop it...but normally I just keep it in my hand and light it. You do get a quick hot feeling, duh , but it doesn't REAL bad.
