Amazing Speaker!
Diana Watson (唐華瑄) is the first foreigner to beat all native Mandarin speakers in a Toastmasters Mandarin speech contest. Her speech, "Am I Strange?", is a humorous speech that teaches how to not make assumptions on one's appearances and accept everyone's unique qualities.

fighting it. Instead, create a new model that makes the old one obsolete." -- R. Buckminster Fuller |

How do we know she isn't Chinese? Did she have to show a birth certificate before the contest to prove it?

Talking Chinese is easy.
Is it whisky? Well, it is safer than wobbing a bank!

As a white male, in his 60's,
grown up in Canada, the U.S., and Europe; I'm really tired of hearing: "a 'black' did this." "a 'women' did this." ,... The really funny thing IS(!): I,...will be called a 'racist'(!) for saying this. On top of this, I have NOTHING(!) to fall back on! I'm not Gay. I'm not an Abandoned child. I'm not a poor Junky or an Alchoholic. I'm not a member of an opressed sect. ....no 'unique qualities'. ...i think my mother even likes me(!). I know, I know,... I guess my problem is: I'm boring. hmm? 🤔 That ain't gonna buy me much sympathy.... Toast! 🍻 to a "..black woman who won a chinese speak contest!" i have a dream. someday, the winner of 'the Roastmaster chinese speaking contest' will be anounced,... only by their name. i have a dream. gallagher .....back to wobbing banks, it's probably SAFER than saying this! |

The audience liked the speech. bravo
How wrong is it to imagine Elmer Fudd doing that toast/speech? i. e. how do you measure position on a scale of pity / privilege?
...to all the coins I've dropped here

The name Gallagher is of ancient Gaelic origin and is derived from word 'gallchobhar', meaning 'foreign help.'

To all of this I would say: so?
Black women, like all humans, possess the basic capacity to do anything else that anyone else can do, with equal or better training. Skin pigment or gender doesn't affect intelligence. Learning a language from your parents and family doesn't mean you'll be better than a person learning it in a structured environment. I can only speak English, but I bet there are millions of people who speak it as a second language who are more clear and better... I'm only clear-ish because I have spell correct, Google, and can edit it all before I hit send. Maybe if it were about any woman carrying more weight in books about Chinese... then gender might be relevant, the distinction between race is largely irrelevant. I didn't see the video, maybe she was carrying a lot of books.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

One can use magical memory techniques to learn a language. Or at least learn a number of words. As I recall Paul Danniels had some books on it, mnemonics.

Because she said, I was born an American, my momma and daddy are both Black, their families both have lived in the States for 300 years.

Yes, she did. In the very beginning of the speech. She has lived in Taiwan a long time.

Jack was talking about a black fella the other day whose name I could not recall, but I knew what fellas he was talking about and I can recall something the fella said: when one is born black in America, you do not know you are black and you root for the Cowboys, not the Indians and then one day you find out, you are the Indians. He did not fit in.
This young lady has a similar story. “Even though I was born an American, even though I was born an American, my momma and daddy are both Black, their families both have lived in the States for 300 years, something inside my core just said “You don’t fit here. In order to find, to discover who you really are, you’re gonna need to go somewhere else to find it.” She left America, it seems to me, because she was black and as a result learned to speak Chinese. So I think it is an important part of her story. https://www.living-corporate.com/2020/10......-watson/
