I'm looking for in-the-hands, non-gimmick coin effects. Is there a book or video out that has these effects which are strong? I don't mind some table effects or is there a book out with these effects?

Thanks

Six,

Take a look further down for the post about Paul Cummins Up in Smoke. Dan has a review, too.

So does Sankey on "Revolutionary Coin Magic."

Six, most of us who try to make magic, wind up using gaffs ONLY where they are really needed.

I have several tricks in print, and almost all are non-gaffed. I have a small book in manuscript that is all about stand-up coin magic and there are no gaffs involved there either.

You might want to start with David Roth's big book and savor the learning. Then... meet the guy. He is great and can be giving when you are ready to learn.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I heard his book is mostly table effect, that's why I did not pick it up.

Roth's book involves a lot of table work but since it is really big, the stand-up work is still worth the book.

In addition to that, to have really nice explanations for such moves as shuttle passes, retention vanishes, and other "important" moves in coin magic can help you to improve your work, in all the "coin-situations" you'll ever encounter.

David Stone has nice routines of stand-up coin magic in both of his tapes about coin magic. Check out the copper-silver routine (non-gaffed) of Paul Wilson in his Unusual Sessions DVD. Great.

The coin effects I do are all in-the-hand, can be surrounded and with ungaffed coins. What I did was look at effects I wanted to accomplish and just adapted them.

Is there a particular coin effect you want to do?

Jon,

You said you have a manuscript out of some of your coin effects. Is this available to the public yet?

From what I have read of Rune Klans from his previous effects taught in Magic Magazine over the last couple of years, most of his material rarely uses the table.

At the bottom of this post I will include a PM sent to another member of the Café, which has details of all of Rune's material from Magic (recently). The point is that I am sure that the material in the his video Three Pieces Of Silver are of similar style. All of which use three coins (that's a surprise)!

Owen

Here is the PM:

...have succeeded in finding the Rune Klan tricks, which I know of that appear in MAGIC Magazine. I have only been getting MAGIC since 2002, so there may be some tricks which you will need to search for before then. The tricks are included in September 2002’s issue, with Michael Close on the cover, and March 2004’s issue, with Alan Shaxon on the cover.

The tricks in the 2002 issue are:

Coins Through, Um…Floor- Three coins are pushed through the close up pad, apparently penetrating the floor. All three coins are next discovered under the pad in a triangle formation. To conclude the coins visibly penetrate back through the close up mat.

Sleeve Slide- As the title implies, this coin vanish is accomplished with the secret aid of sleeves. However, unlike most sleeving methods, this move does not require a suite jacket. Loose sweaters and long sleeve shirts will work fine.

Coins Across Cards- Three coins are displayed and seem to travel on command from one hand to the other. Explaining that this trick may be too much to follow, the performer admits that the trick was originally performed with cards. The three coins then change into three cards!

One Back Up!- It begins as nothing more than Pat Hazell’s “Down the Falls, Up the Back” the classic gag pretending to spring the cards from one hand to the other behind the back. Pat's swindle was explained in Stephen Minch’s The New York Magic Symposium, collection 5. Actually a simple riffle of the cards gives the auditory illusion of the cards springing from one hand to the other, while held behind the back.

In Rune’s “One Back Up!” the magician repeats the springing feat, this time actually showing the deck caught in the opposite hand. Taking things further still, one card is shot up behind the back and caught in the opposite hand.

Pensive- The magician displays a small dot of ink on the palm of one of his empty hands. “Do you know where that dot caome from? It came from this pen!” Then without any apparent movement, a pen is produced between the fingers.

The Ouch Move- A Colour Change.

The 2004 issue only contains one routine:

Impromptue Hit Man- In this interlude with a pen and a coin, the objects are made to vanish, change places, and morph into each other.

I only perform one of the routines, “Pensive” this really is a great routine which I urge you to learn. It only takes 5 seconds. Mind you the angles aren’t that good.

If you are interested in three coin routines (it seems likely as that is what Rune’s stuff is), there is also a great routine in June 2003’s Genii magazine. It can be used as part of any three coin routine, or on it’s own. It is the vanish and reproduction of three coins using the JW grip. The trick is called “Three Belgian Style” and is by Duc Nhien. The cover of this issue has Rich Bloch on it.

Check out Rune's stuff. He doesn't use gaffs.

I also just picked up R. Paul Wilson's booklet 13, and it also has two three coin routines which are very nice. There is another coin and purse routine which is seemingly a three coin routine, but little does the audience know...that you're actually also using a mongolian bush monkey! Pick one up before they sell out. Hank Lee's having a sale.

Only one of the three is completely in-the-hands, but the coins through table is designed for a hard surface restaurant table. (Of course if you're doing complete strolling you're not going to want to perform a coins through table. Which again brings to mind Rune's "coins through floor", followed by his short chink-a-chink which is found in his video).

Only one of Wilson's routines uses a gaff. I don't have any more Wilson stuff, but his DVD/videos have a few routines as well as his 3 Fly "crowded coins".

Search for Doug Brewer. Heard good stuff about his book. The companion DVD will be out soon enough.

Dean Dill's Matrix, anything from Hit The Road DVD and Ammar's Easy to Master series on money magic. There is one effect where the last coin drops from nowhere.

I actually have almost everything mentioned. I have Dean Dill's two newest DVDs. I have 13 by Wilson. I have the video where he teach 3 fly and other great effects. I have Ammar's Easy to Master Money Miracles. I have Hit the Road and last but not least, Rune Klan's three pieces of silver which I did not watch because I have been busy.

Most of the stuff you guys named uses a floor or table. I looking for the exact opposite.

Thanks guys.

Six,

If you'll make the time to watch Rune's video, I think you'll be quite pleased. Ninety percent of the stuff he does fits your requirements, and the one thing he does on the floor, well, most places you perform at will have a floor.

Of course, if you find Rune's stuff just too easy, and you want standing, surrounded, examinable, audience-tested routines that require a bit of practice, you could decide to invest the time into Palms of Steel volumes 1, 2, and 3. Silver Circle, Beijing Coins across, Chinese Silk and Silver, Coercive Purse, Through and Through, Triple Alliance, Copper/Silver/Bent, and New York Spellbound are all routines from my professional strolling playlist, and they all fit your requirements.

Okay, a c/s coin may sneak in here and there, but neither that, nor a "Karate coin" really qualify as "gaffs", right?
Is THAT a PALMS OF STEEL 5 Banner I see? YARRRRGH! Please visit The Magic Bakery

Somehow, they never seem like gaffs in your hands Curtis, just in the hands of mortals. Smile

You know, it sounds like Six needs to start first with Modern Coin Magic by J. B. Bobo. Anyone who's absorbed that book might not be asking the question.

Here is a list of stuff I like.

jay sankey's No Jacket Required is a good trick
as is his mr. clean accross and Tenkai pennies.

gregory wilson's 99 cent trick is nice and easy.

Many coins accross routines exist. See the
coins accross phase in kam's work. requries
no extras.

Ammar's coins thru silk is great
Kurtz has a great coins and silk
Kam has a great coins and silk

Roth Spellbound routine

John Bannon has some interesting coin work
that are quite attainable.

Many one coin routines exist, a simple one
of which can be gleaned from John Bannon's
One is the Onliest routine.
