For those of us who consider Doug's incredible body of work almost as necessary as oxygen, this is very welcome news! I've wanted a hardcover collection of Doug's work for YEARS (I love me them little chapbooks, but they definitely don't do justice to the value contained within) and of course I ordered from Vanishing Inc immediately!

I will have to sit down and compare the contents with the booklets side by side when it arrives, but on glancing at the provided contents list... is the R2D2 tear not included in this? Gad! It is one of my most-used Dyment techniques...

Anyway, with fully ONE THIRD of this being brand new material, this is a NO brainer!!!

According to Doug’s website, R2D2 is in Calculated Thoughts under the name “Quarto.” Perhaps this is a copyright safety precaution.

Doug says the original R2D2 manual contains 8 different tears. Quarto is the one tear from the booklet that was most talked about and most performed. I imagine this is the one that you personally use.

Aaaah... thank you, Madison! That makes perfect sense! Yep, it is the one I use, so I'm happy it is included. (Weird; I have no memory of the seven other tears... just the main one. I'll have to check when I get home!)

Thanks again!

I've been keeping an eye on Doug's material for years, but never ordered anything because of the relatively high price of the individual booklets. Compared to some other books, the price of Calculated Thoughts is incredibly low for a 400 page hardback and I've ordered a copy from Vanishing Inc UK. I can see this going out of stock quickly ...

Thank you for pricing this book so reasonably.
A lot of books these days are way out of my price range.

Agreed! (and I have purchased some of the booklets previously)

Doug is one of my favorite thinkers and creators. His works are a ridiculous value and having them available in one book for this price is an embarrassment of riches. I own most of his works in booklet form and instantly bought this book. I have used his material in formal and informal settings for years. I can’t wait to read this (it arrived yesterday). Thanks for making this available Doug and Vanishing Inc.

Ditto. I absolutely love everything I've ever had the pleasure of receiving from him. Congrats on the book Doug.

My copy has arrived, a day late due to a postal delay (Vanishing Inc sent it out from their UK warehouse a few hours after I ordered it). It's obviously going to take quite a while to read it, but I can already see that I'll enjoy it. Everything I expected is in there, including Doug's essays on stacks and centre tears, plus a good deal more, and it's beautifully produced, on slightly glossy paper, and well illustrated. I do have a slight problem with the footnotes, though, which are faint and in a smaller type. They may be in red, but I can't tell because I'm colour blind. You may not have this problem if you have normal vision.

Given that this book is being sold at less than the price of two of the original booklets, it's great value and I'm sure it'll be "collectable" in the future.

Mine arrived the other day but it is my Valentine’s Day present from my wife. That mean I have to wait until tomorrow.

Doug stuff is top notch, especially with stacked esp and cards decks.

I got all of his past books and this one will go into my collection.

Vanishing Inc. has recorded an interview video in conjunction with this release, the first half of which is now available online.

Barry, the footnotes are grey. I did find them easier to read in the booklets, but the value in this book is far more than the footnotes.

I just got mine, but I’m at work and cannot delve into it yet.

I have just finished the book. Great work as to be expected.

Calculated thoughts is a great name because each and every decision made does indeed feel calculated. It all reads pretty scientifically in many aspects, but there is great value provided within. I especially love the center tear. I wasn’t familiar with R2D2, so being exposed to it through this book was a real pleasure. I’ve been practicing it nonstop since reading (partly because I find it fun to do.) It reads rather complicated, but with a card in hand, it is pretty apparent what is supposed to happen.

I recently went back to Corinda and was thinking about the concept of “super mentality” as a mentalist ability. Memory, rapid calculation, that kind of thing. There are tons of DVDs and many books about “psychic” mentalism, but not a lot about exaggerated versions of normal mental processes.

As I started reading through Flash Squared, I realized that one of the distinct differences between Doug Dyment and a lot of others is that he seems to approach mentalism with an analytical mind. His magic square material, his thought processes with card stacks, and even (arguably his most touchy-feely” section) Zenermancy all have that super mentality feel to them. I really appreciate that aspect of his work.

I don’t know how much influence this will have on would-be performers, but I bet Doug’s material would really play well for engineers, accountants, programmers, and anyone else who works with a lot of numbers. I plan to put in some work with magic squares, personally.

Enjoyed the interview, Doug, and look forward to part 2. Although I have all of your material, I've never actually seen you - other than on video as a participant for Bob Cassidy performing his card memory routine in 1997!! So it was nice to finally put a face to the name!

I have almost the entire collection of Doug booklets and, knowing that the majority of the contents here are derived from them, I can confidently say that this will probably be one of the most important books to ever be published regarding mentalism. This is no exaggeration. Doug has managed to develop unsurpassed material. His DAO stack alone is worth the price of admission. It's the kind of thing that can make an amateur hobbyist look like an absolute master. The next-gen mentalists are very blessed to have access to a book like this. It's a shame that Disjuncture from Stimulacra is not here... it's one of the best Bank Nights I've ever seen (the "empty envelopes" ending using 7 envelopes in total is the best imo).

In that case, the Magnum Opus is complete. I would be getting it either way, just for the extra content and to have everything in a single book. Elite material.
