Spoiled for Choice is an improved version of Disjuncture.

Let me attempt to clarify the question surrounding "Disjuncture" and "Spoiled for Choice" ...

"Disjuncture" is a "bank night" type of routine, where the participant chooses an envelope from a group, and that envelope contains something of lower value (a lottery ticket, say), while the remaining envelopes have higher-value contents ($100 banknotes, say). Of course, it's possible to do this in reverse, with the selected envelope being the high value one, and the rest otherwise.

"Disjuncture" differs from many of these approaches in that half of its six envelopes are high valued and the rest low. An extremely fair selection process is used, yet all of the entertainer's envelopes end up being of one type, with the participant getting the others. The selection process appears vaguely PATEO-like, with the participant always choosing first, and the entertainer being offered an identical choice immediately following.

It was first published in 2007, and proved very popular among my readers. Since then, I have developed a much better way of producing the identical result. In this new version, the participant makes all of the choices herself: she chooses the order in which the envelopes are considered; with each selection during the process, she always has three options from which to choose; and ultimately she designates three envelopes for herself and three for the entertainer. Regular envelopes are used, of a size appropriate to their contents and the performing venue.

Because the routine is so radically different in performance, I opted for a new name: "Spoiled for Choice". The original "Disjuncture" methodology will still be of interest to some, for both historic reasons and potential usage in other scenarios, so it is included as an appendix, but I would be surprised if anyone chooses to use it for this particular routine.

Finally (and not that it matters in the real world), this is likely more of a "magician fooler" than anything in my repertoire.

Absolutely love this book and have found some wonderful ideas within its pages, however I'm kind of puzzled about one routine: Menologue.

I've been trying to figure out why Doug says this is an improved version of Lewis Jones' original. The original required no memorisation of the sequence, but Doug's does. So I must be missing something glaringly obvious - what's the improvement here?

That's not to detract from what is otherwise the best book I've bought and read for a long, long time btw; just this one routine confused me, mostly because I love the Jones original and really wanted this to bring something new to the table but can't figure out what it is!

Thanks a lot Madison! That's a brilliant review to elucidate more about the contents while the book doesn't arrive!

Just got my copy today. I knew that as soon as Doug told us the book was coming that I was going to have it. It was automatic. I am giddy. I have three of his booklets, and I was already a fanboy. But this is excellent. I can’t put it down, and the rest that I have thumbed through, having this all in one place, is like a dream. If this book is not listed as a classic 50 years from now, I will be shocked (I will also be dead, but I digress). This is the best value in Mentalism I have seen in five years. I have seen far less quality, depth, and real world practical value in books three times the price of the 60 I paid. This one goes in the “I will never part with it” category. Bravo, Doug. You have left us a gift.

To be fair, I did not claim to have "improved" Lewis' original method (improvement is subjective: what one sees as a gain, another can view as a failing). I said that I "modified (and extended) Lewis' method somewhat, and describe the result here with his enthusiastic permission."

Lewis' original only covered the first ten calendar months; mine covers all twelve. Lewis' methodology requires mathematical calculations in real time (multiplying by three, casting out fours); I try to avoid such calculations whenever possible, so have entirely eliminated them in my version. Lewis used a Stebbins-like sequence, with sequential card values separated by three; although I think it unlikely that an audience member would detect this when examining the diary, I have eliminated this concern.

It is not necessary to memorize my sequence: it can be calculated in real time: whether my math-less method of such calculation is an improvement over Lewis' is a subjective issue. In truth, the technique that I use is employed in several of my methods, and I no longer even think of it as a calculation: I just "know" it the same way a Bridge player knows that Spades are more valuable than Diamonds.

Hope this helps!

I absolutely LOVE Menologue, and have mentioned in in several post here at the Café for years. Although you don't have to, I use a m****d d****, so that I never touch the deck and, at least from the participant's perspective, my prediction is written and on the table before the effect begins. One of my all time go to effects.

Dr. JK, in his review, wonders about the illustrations in Calculated Thoughts. I can't draw decent hands, so all of the illustrations (I think fifteen) featuring those were made by Tony Dunn, consulting artist at Vanishing Inc.

The remainder of the (more than two hundred) illustrations were created by me.

Hands are some of the most difficult things for artists to portray, which is one of the reasons Norman Rockwell went out of his way to emphasize hands in his paintings (because it displayed his skill). Thanks for clarifying!

And thx for the interesting art trivia. Makes sense to someone like me that can’t draw anything :/

Tip:

BankWave by John Carey and Spoiled for Choice by Doug Dyment both have great ideas to complement each other. Bankwave will benefit from the third choice in the second half of performance (I also prefer to use envelopes with different colors as it is particularly good to make the participants shuffling the envelopes more visual)... and Spoiled for Choice can have that 5% chance of requiring sleight completely erased.

I also think it's good to offer yet another choice before the reveal in Spoiled for Choice, taking even more advantage of its strong points. If you think about it... it's possible to use 7 envelopes keeping the extra separated for the final choice, making things more dramatic.

I'm surprised to see that the main update to disjuncture came in 2017 and yet (after checking emails) I have pointed in that direction in 2015. I thought it was a mainstream idea already but apparently I was wrong. Hopefully performers reading this will take even more advantage of these methods.

PS: you can end even cleaner making the participant get envelopes with absolutely nothing inside.

Cheers

Max

The level of piracy is overwhelming. I've seen this book for 5 bucks some weeks ago. I wonder why anyone would want to publish anything anymore. Support the creators!
