Hi everyone! I was watching this talk/demonstration by David Parr "Spirits in the Dark: An Overview of the Séance Craze" https://youtu.be/OwMbCnloqwk?t=271 in which he uses a wood box and a pencil to "communicate" with the spirit world.
Does anyone know if this is related to the "tapping pencil" effect by Ralph W. Read that appears in "My best: best tricks from best brains" by Thompson Jr? I think is a very "simple" effect but can have a great impact in a "seance" context. I'm working on building my first seance and this is my first post, so please excuse me if I'm writing in the wrong place. I love this forum and I've been learning so much on different topics. If you have any suggestions on similar effects to the one in the video, I'll deeply appreciate it. Best, Fowill |

Hi Fowill,
Welcome! I do not know your answer but want to encourage you to aggressively work on 50 posts. It will open many doors on the Café'.

The effect can be found in the Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic by Martin Gardner. Great book.

Tarbell vol. 4, 259p. Pretty similar.
P.S. Am I allowed to post like that? |

How about a tap dancing pencil, like the dancing Hanky? That would be cool.

Fowill, is there a reason why you didn’t contact me with questions about the method for my routine? My contact info is easily findable. And a question for the rest of you: is there a reason why you didn’t advise fowill to ask me, since the question was specific to my performance, basically “Can you confirm that this is the method David is using?”

Hi, everyone. I’d like to recreate David’s unpublished routine, but rather than ask him, can anyone confirm that this is the method he is using? Thanks in advance! 😁

Folks, I say this not because I think my routine is a heavily guarded state secret, and not because I feel insulted somehow, but because it’s odd that no one, from the original poster to the experienced user base, thought it would be a good idea to ask me about my routine. If I’d run across a post that included a link to a magician’s performance along with a question about the method, my first response would be to suggest contacting the performer because, well, because that makes sense

I'm sorry David.
I just wanted to help out by pointing someone to a book which contains a method that reaches this effect. I do not know what method you were using (but of course it could be the same method). And it was also not clear that this person is going to exactly copy your performance, right? So there is no explicit exposure of the method here, only a reference. And how the person is going to use it, is up to his own ethical judgment. I would strongly suggest to him to come up with a unique performance. But thank you for your message. I will think about this better next time. Cheers, Luc |

You are totally right and I should have contacted you first, I'm happy to see that you are in this forum and my deepest apologies for the inconvenience, it was not my intention. I really loved your lecture and it was unwise for me to write directly in the forum (without previous experience in it) without consulting you first. So, I can delete this thread (please confirm if you prefer this) and I offer to you my apologies once again. With deep respect for your work, Fowill |

Fowill, Delimbeau, thanks for the thoughtful responses. Much appreciated. Honestly, I’m glad when magicians enjoy my performances, because I know that magicians understand the work that goes into the material. And I don’t think this thread should be deleted, because it raises some important things for us to consider, things that might expand our point of view 👻🖤
This is how we grow, as people not just as performers. It’s not always easy. But it’s a good thing |

Thank you once again David for your understanding! I take it as a quick and essential lesson/reminder on being mindful before posting and how to approach certain subjects/questions.

This is a difficult issue though.
What if a forum member, for example, asks 'can someone suggest some good references for the ambitious card? You know, like Daryl did'. Should these kind of questions only be answered via PM or by referring to the performer that is mentioned? Or by saying: 'do a forum or google search'? |

I’ll point out that Daryl is no longer among the living, so it’s impossible to ask him directly. Also, there’s a difference between a general question about an effect or plot in magic and a specific one about a performance. The issue here is not so much about exposure of methods in the open forum as it is about thoughtfulness and courtesy.
