HN Review 66: Boomerang Rubber Band – Chris Kenner/Dan Garrett

AD:

A most unusual effect. Performer stretches a rubber band around his outstretched thumb and little finger. He then shoots the rubber band across the room about 15 feet. It hits the floor and begins a reverse spin and returns to the performer rolling on its edge!! Charlie Miller created much talk with this effect many years ago in Genii Magazine. Now here is this legendary juggling feat that will amaze everyone.

REVIEW:

Very visual quickie. This impromptu effect is also described in the Dan Harlan’s video trilogy, but the printed instructions are more detailed. Be aware, it takes a LONG time to acquire the knack (I found it more difficult than snapping a knot with a shoelace!)

Just a stunt, but it does get a reaction.

Overall rating: ok

Hi,
Well i recently learnt to do it and it's great.
If you can get the band to flick up into your hand off your foot it is impressive, i can only do the flick up about 25% of the time.

Anyone know who the original creator of this effect is or how long it has been around?

It's been around for ages.
From what I know it was passed down from magician to magician by way of word of mouth for many many years.

Al Angello taught it to me directly.
Thank You so much Al, I got it down to a science now.Smile
Looks great!

One tip I remember Al telling me was to make sure you are using bands made of 100% rubber.
Some bands simply do NOT work because of that simple factor.

If you practice this and DO get it down, it's pretty wild and lots of fun.
Having FUN is the key.

Thank you once again Al, for teaching this to me.

Respectfully,
Nick Verna

Thank you for all of your kind words. What Nick is talking about is the rubber band magic workshop I did at the IBM 6 September meeting. A good boomerang rubber band shooter like Dan Harlan can shoot a rubber band out 10 feet, hit the floor, reverses direction, come back to you, run up your arm, and land in your shirt pocket.

There are two handlings of this trick the most common handling can be found on Dan Harlan's three DVD volume rubber band magic set on vol. 3. The pamphlet mentioned is by Chris Kenner, and Dan Garrett, which you can get from Dan Garret a Café member. I also heard that Michael Weber teaches it some where. Paul Daniels an English magician does it on stage in large theaters. I learned a different and stronger handling from my friend Don Cox also a Café member, this technique can be master by anyone.

Most rubber bands are not pure rubber so you must buy the "brites" assortment box availible at large stationery stores, you can use any color in the box except the pink, and the yellow.

I will be at Metro Magic III New Jersey, Kutztown Pa. magic convention, and Bob Little's Super Sunday Phila. area in November, and I promise to give a demonstration, and or lesson to anyone who ask's, I will only have a limited supply of boomerang worth rubber bands with me, and if you have any questions you can PM me.

The history of this trick has been discussed recently at "the science of magic" forum here at the magic Café, and you can also find a link there to a good youtube boomerang demo.

The handling I use for the boomerang trick is back up on my web site at: http://www.juggleral.com click "video" in the top right hand corner, it is not perfect, but it should remove all doubt of it being a myth.

A few years ago, I had a guy send (via email) the manuscript with photos on this. I'll have to dig it out and see whom that was...

Two weeks ago, I saw Joel Bauer keep a whole crowd of magicians mesmerized with this.

It was a cool stunt and presentation.

I do this all the time and love it.
I cant imagine saying that its not worth learning.
Experiment with it. It doesn't work well on
every surface and you need to use a round band.
Size #16 works the best. You can easily shoot it
10-15 feet and have it roll right back into your hand.
..And I know this sounds silly but I get much better
reactions when I say, "here boy, here boy" when I have
the band returning. Spectators are funny like that.

The only bad part is that its so hard for people to see.

Oh yea you need broad day light, or a spotlight on stage with a white floor to really see it. A #16 rubber band is best for the traditional handling, but if you go to my web site http://www.juggleral.com you will see me use a #32 with the Don Cox handling. You can use #16, #18, #31, and #32 pure rubber rubber bands, and all are in the "brites" assortment pack.

The traditional handling does not crank up enough torque for me, and I have never been able to lock my pinky finger to do it.
