Hi fellow magicians

I'm looking for a card that is either magnetic in itself of has metal edges. Meaning it's the very edge of the card that is magnetic - not the center. The effect is, that I want that card to attach to my fingering when I move my hand close to the deck standing upright in a glass. From the spectators view the deck is standing upright in a glass covered with a small silk covering it. It appears like I'm reaching for the silk and at the same time taking one card from the middle of the deck. The spectators chosen card.

Where can I find such a card? The card could be magnetic in itself attaching to a steel fingering, or the card could be of steel attaching to a magnetic fingering.

Magically yours

Look for a Shim or Shimmed card, though I don't know if they are magnetic all the way to the edge.
How examinable does this thing need to be? could you, say double sided tape a piece of thin steel to the edge of the card?

This is exactly what I was going to recommend. You can use an old razor blade, the ones from the "snap-off" box knives work great. put some tape over the sharp edge or preferably, file it off if you have the tools. Be careful!
Then, when it is the size and shape you desire, you can adhere it to the back of the card with either double-sided tape or magician's wax. The only downside I could see is the potential for the added thickness causing a break in the deck which might be visible from side angles. But if the deck is put into the glass haphazardly, then you won't notice.

The advantage obviously is it will work with any card, free selection, and can easily be removed and the card handed out for examination if desired.

The shim card could also be produced with the shim in any location you want, but that is best done by someone who is expert in the process.

If you can't get this to work with shims or magnets, you could always use thread. The thread would be attached to the card, and hang over the back of the deck.

Henry Evans had a trick where the magician can pull two chosen cards from a deck shuffled by the spectator. Uses two shimmed cards and a horrible magring an d you catch the cards by the short edge with the mag and pull them up.
I can't recall the title of the trick but if I find it I will post it.

Hi all

Jim - nice suggestion, but the deck will be ocvered by a silk, so the thread loop will not stick out and be rachable.

Thanks for the tips and trick with razorblades and metal, creating my own “shimmed” card. However, these cards are available, I justg need to find the right shop. Last time a saw one was in Blackpool.

Hi Mikael, Now that you mention it - I recall Henry Evans having a version of this effect. Don’t recall the size of the ring, I just remember that he did have one at Blackpool that fitted on my finger.....but I will look it up. Thanks for reminding me.

Tried to find the Henry Evans version, but haven’t had the luck of indentifying which of the many Henry Evans effects it is. Anybody who know the name of the Henry Evans effect.
