"Elephant from Denmark" is a great mental trick. When I perform it for anyone, they just can't believe it. But I've improved this trick. In the normal trick, the first part looks like a math magic (who knows the trick understands what I am saying). But my version is free from it. It's great.

There is a nice Elephant from Denmark effect on Mark Jenesets "Magicard". If you don't know what it is, its a credit card with all these fun little tricks on it. Math tricks at that. Carry it with you everywhere you carry your wallet. its great.

I've been using this trick for a few months. It works well on some people (if they haven't heard it before), but others (like my closer friends) always seem to figure it out, immediately.

Some remember the math trick from when they learned multiplication in elementary school and others just come up with the answer (within seconds) by doing it in their heads choosing a different starting number.

Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing your version. It seems that if it were made less mathematical and more story-like, it would be more awing (and thus more fun)

I've always thought of this as the most obvious force ever. Anyhow, what's different about your version?

You always think that this is the most obvious force and the world and his wife must know it but ...

About 18 months ago I did it for a small social evening, about 50 people, and the buzz in the hall at the conclusion was amazing. So we can't always assume, and yet if I thought of doing it again I would still worry about familiarity. Hence I do try and get the creative juices working on this one, to create a new Elephants and generate that buzz again.

And so far? Let's just say it's still a work in progress, amongst others.

It is a nice trick, but that chances of finding someone that hasn't already done it would be hard.

Even if you have improved it. ;-) hehe

I agree most of the folks I work with already know it. Given some thought though, I don't think it would be hard to come up with a similar effect.

If you don't like a mathematical Force, you can force 'D' from alphabet cards. Classic Force, Svengali type Force, or any other more natural Force. Then proceed as the original method.

Use a STATE in the USA. Delaware is the ONLY state that fits the bill as North Dakota starts with an 'N' and South Dakota starts with an 'S.'

Most people in the USA are familiar with the states of the union, many Americans, however, are woefully inept at world geography.

For the method of arriving at the correct number - I use a deck of cards. Most Americans hate doing math, too, in my experience. Smile This is more direct for me, allows me to move into another routine altogether and still has the impact of the original in the eyes of the audience without the heightened probability of someone having a problem with the math.
