I need help finding a variation of 8 Card Brainwave. (I've done tons of searching, but TMC doesn't even recognize the 8 as valid, so makes it tough...)

The difference between the original version and what I'm doing is that in the former, one card is shown odd such as a different color back, but in subsequent performances the odd back may change -- this time red, next time blue, etc. In mine, if I were doing back colors, you'd always see red as the odd back no matter which card you chose.

There has been SO much done with 8CB that I'd bet money what I'm doing has been done before, but I'm anxious to find out by who and when.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Yes, TMC does recognize the 8 as valid. Using the advanced search either 8-card brainwave or without the hyphen 8 card brainwave work as long as Exact Phrase is clicked.

I believe that Eight Card Brainwave from The Card Magic of Nick Trost might fit what you're looking for (https://www.conjuringarchive.com/list/bo......ht=37610). Without giving too much away, it's a 50/50 chance what the chosen cards' back will be (the selected card is examinable, but unfortunately the rest of the packet is not). And if you really want to go dwn the rabbit hole, you can follow the Conjuring Archive link and go through the "B'wave and variations" section, but that might be too overwhelming to actually give any practical suggestions.

Not sure how much this helps given that this source is not the easiest book to get a hold of unless you're willing to pay well over a hundred for it, but if you can get a copy (maybe they'll release it as PDF at some point now that Murphy's bought L&L?) that might be a good place to look. Although it's a great book overall, I'm sure you'll get more out of it than just that one trick.

As an aside, you might have more success using your regular search engine of choice (Google, Bing, etc.) and just add the words "The Magic Café" at the end. I find that usually points me to whatever topic I'm looking for.

The Card Magic of Nick Trost was available as an ebook, but I don't remember from whom -- it was a while ago. Might be L&L, but Lybrary.com is worth a try...

Salmon, good point in your last sentence -- I made the same discovery. Google Knows All -- a bit scary.

Jay, if you do find the variant you're looking for, would you mind sharing what it is? It sounds like a nice enhancement of the (already great) trick.

Here is what popped into my head after reading this thread.

The weakness - you start with the 8-cards in a stack, rather than in a fan or a spread on the table.

Ask the spectator to begin to choose any number from 1-8, including 1 or 8. After they have chosen the number, either spread the 8-cards on the table in the appropriate fashion so that the choice number is the specific card you want it to be.

Assumption: You will be counting from your left to your right.

If you are holding the packet with faces up because the back color is the variation, then make sure when you spread the packet the red back cards end up where they need to be based on the called number. If you do a pad spread from your left to your right, all the red back cards will be either all even numbers or all odd numbers depending upon how you set-up the packet. If the cards won't work with a left to right spread, then you can just do a right to left spread and the red back cards will be at the right numbers. Just count from left to right and land on the red back card. (You could also deal them if you don't like doing a pad spread.)

A simpler method would be to simply deal the cards on the table, get a number from 1-8 and count from whichever end lands you on your red back card.
