Evikshin: Nothing new. I felt that way decades ago, which is why I worked out a few "single-card double lifts." Lifts that start out allowing the spec. to "handle" a single card. HL.

Hey Harry. You can count on me to mention your kick double lift . Pay attention men, it's in Deck-Sterity and it's a very convincing double that seems very natural and casual. You can really just grab it and snap it over! Awesome! Thanks again Harry

Harry: I have used the double lift you explained in Close-Up Card Magic since the Seventies as my main double-lift, and still do. I can do a two, three or four card lift without a get-ready using it, and the registration is extremely tight. It is the only lift I like to do in bright sunlight.
Larry Jennings always gave me a lot of grief about it, though Vernon yelled at him several times. Vernon said "It is just like Nate Leipzig's, but Leipzig took it from the left side instead of the inner end." |

Thanks, Magicfish; I've used it for decades - always works for me.
Whit: That's still the one I use mostly, particularly during an amb. cd routine, where a double is used more than usual. Larry, Dai and I went through a couple of yelling sprees together. Larry was a sweetheart until he had a couple of beers in him. I remember during one session, he agreed with me and Dai about my way of doing the lift, as taught in C-UCM, just as we were all having a couple of beers brought to the table. It was all nice and genteel until he was finishing his second (or third, long time ago, not sure)beer. Then it became a yelling session - Dai and I against Larry. HL.

Harry, You taught me the kick DL one Saturday afternoon at Tannen's close to 40 years ago. It has served me well and is the only one that even gets by my non-lay family. John

Ejohn: Good Lord, forty years ago - I wan only ten years old!!! Seriously, glad to hear that you're still using it, and that it works for you. It's the cleanest DL or turnover for me. Best - HARRY L.

If you want to know if your DL is any good or not, perform your ACR for 11 and 12 year olds. These are a killer audience for three reasons;
They have no qualms about shouting out if they see anything dodgy. Their eyesight is fantastic, unlike the older generation we so often perform for. Because of their height they are really up close - nothing gets past them. If you can do a routine for this age group without being challenged then you can get it past anybody! |

This thread has proved a point I have held for a LONG time now, and I thank each and every one of you for confirming it: The DL is NOT an "easy" sleight". I have seen it classified as such in many books, and perhaps that has led to the ABUSE of this powerful sleight. But Mike Close has stated in Workers that he feels that FEW people do a DL correctly.
Other thoughts: Maybe I a the only person READING the book, but, Dr. Ken Krenzel's Relaxed Impossibilities has some GREAT work on the DL, tabled and in the hands. Of course, Harry Lorayne and Larry Jennings have done extensive work in this area as well. Paul Curry's Relativity DL is beautiful too. Point is, if it is SO easy, why has SO much work been done on the DL? Because it is actually one of the most DIFFICULT sleights to do well, and by that I mean that your audience hasn't clue that what you are doing is ANYTHING other than showing ONE card. Go ahead Greek Dealers and Ernst Earick junkies and scoff at me, but, many magicians tend to get by with a passable DL while they bust their knuckles learning Greeks. And while the Greek is a great sleight for certain types of work, it is the DL that is more foundational. Let's face it, a DL has wider application. Think outside the box: It is more than just a ML. It works so beautifully for instance as an intrinsic part of many BEAUTIFUL card controls. I cite Marlo and Daryl's work in this area - Jennings too - and many more including Harry Lorayne and Mike Close. People talk about misdirecting the move. I say tthat the move should look SO perfect that you can draw ATEENTION to the fact that you are displaying a single(?) card. DDLT - actually invented by magician Francis Haxton is a prime example of the necessity of directing attention TO the action. We are supposed to be merely showing a card. So, why do I see a DL looking different than a SL? I shouldn't. Why do a SL as straight forward and a DL as a drunken ballerina pirouette? Or, the usual DEATH GRIP on the DL. Sorry folks, but I really loathe seeing the DL as referred to as an "easy" sleight. No matter WHAT method you use, it should look NO different than a SL. Strike, no get ready, getting a break, push-off, whatever! My mentor made me learn MLs by having me first get used to the muscle memory and "feel" of a SL. He felt that only THEN could a DL/ML be successful. Also, he said "Put yourself in this mindset when doing a DL/ML: you are displaying a SINGLE card. Think THAT way and you are halfway home." Vlad: I've said that for years - when teaching ANY sleight - do the action normally, without doing the sleight, until you have the "feel" of the normal action. Then, make the sleight look just like that. HL

Mickey iw as asking for a specific dl on wilsons tape. he offers 20+ dl's. so how I am supposed tp use google & co to find out which one you are talking about? I'd like to know which one you have been talking about and think is the best dl.
I tried to find the dl by ross but I couldn't find it, sorry. a fruiendly user sent me a pm telling me the names of the 2 books by ross. so I am at the same point as I am with wilsons tape. out of all the dl's: which one are the good ones you have been talking baout here so far? that's why I was asking. the time time it took to tell me that you needed 30 seconds to find it, vould have been used to simply help me out on that, instead. I'd really appricate help here.
