Hi, this is a non-magical subject, but on the art of busking - I was wondering, if I took my acoustic guitar into Maidenhead high street [quite busy] on a saturday and sat in the middle of it and played - how many times would I get beaten up [in one day] and how much could I expect to make [in one day?]

I guarantee you will not make as much as you would busking with Magic.
Guitar Buskers (and I have been one) Work a trickle and not a flush meaning they leave a receptacle out all the time. You will get change. If you flush a hat with a magic show you are asking for money. You will get folding green back frog skins. If you are interested in money, do magic, comedy magic. If you think busking with a guitar is hard, try an accordian.

If you can float the guitar, or do a levitation on it (ala broomstick suspension) or juggle three of them, then you might make a few Quid.

I got an idea ... how about doing a SHOW when playing ... and you could do a flush that way and even get a trickle at the same time .... but maybe one will cancel out the other ....

Its about showmanship - you could do a pitch with a guitar, but I'm sure it would be harder to maintain a crowds interest. Some upbeat music that will make people want to tap their feet, singing would be a big bonus, and some good jokes between songs. Once you get a crowd, make sure you use some audience participation to keep them interested. It's not impossible, but magic would be a lot easier.
I saw a band on the streets of San Fran once - they had a massive crowd and I couldn't even see the tip hat for the crowd - if they didn't make money, I'd be shocked. The thing about street performing is simple: if the crowd isn't interested, they walk away. You learn to get good fast - your only other choice is to quit. They will sit through a movie no matter how bad it is, but they won't stay for a street performance if your not good. If nothing else, do it to find out how good you are.

I stopped Music for Magic.
More fun, more money as a performer etc. Only problem is you don't pick up recording deals as a magician. LOL |

I dunno, I got a recording deal last week.
All I have to do is buy six CDs for a dollar and I get the seventh one free! I think that's a pretty good recording deal. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Wow thanks for the information Bill - hows about I get beaten up 13 times then I run away with the money and guitar intact!
thanks for the input guys, I think playin the guitar could make a bit, however, with street magic how would you ask for money? would I a) stand in the same spot with 16 hats in a circle around me as I performed or b) walk around and steal change from their pockets as I do an 'experiment' [such as blindfolding them and saying 'you may feel a slight tug in your pocket and a rustle of change but don't worry - then wait for 15 mins and when you take the blindfold off there will be a great surprise!' ?? -Francisco ps. thanks to all who bothered to write in this post lol

You do the show and at the end of the show you put out ONE hat and ask (not beg) your audience to make donations if they enjoyed the show. Asking for money this way is called a flush, meaning you get the money all at once. When you leave out a can it is called a trickle and for a musician busker especially you will collect mostly pocket change unless you are giving the audience a lot more than music. The speech you make to ask for money is called a "Hat Line". If you would like more information and some examples on hat lines check here: http://www.thedannyhustleshow.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=28 and here: http://www.thedannyhustleshow.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=24 There is also some great stuff to be found in the first year archives here at the magic Café. http://www.themagiccafe.com/archive1/index.php I hope this helps. Hit your hat line Befor your last trick! This dose 2 things:
1. lets those who are not going to tip know so thay can leave, or you can weed them out of your front line. 2. lets those who are going to tip you get there cash ready, if you sping it on them at the end thay will still give but you are more likly to get change as that is what was handy.

I have never busked with a guitar so I am not an expert. I am a musician and I play my guitar daily. I actually became a magician because it allowed me to entertain more audiences, more often. Music is great, and I love music, don't get me wrong. But if you are not playing the right music, for the right crowd, at the right time....it's not entertaining. Magic, on the other hand, entertains old and young alike, as well as people that don't even speak your language. Now I am faced with a challenge to somehow mix my music and my magic together to deliver an unbelievable performance. So far, I have been limited to blend the 2.

Speaking of busking with accordians, I was in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago and there was an Accordian Trio playing some incredible stuff. They were mesmerising. I stopped and watched them for about ten minutes.
Of course, I think I was the only one that put money in their hat so.... |

For a while I saw a Busker from Alaska who used two electick guitars busking in Cardiff. The necks used to cross over each other, very novel and very good at it too. He used to racke it in. Beyound that I have never seen any Gutarist do very well.
I don't know what become of him! Mario |
