Description Prohibition Monte drastically enhances one of the world’s most famous card swindles; giving it a truly impossible ending that will leave your audiences running for the cops! Straight from the close-up act of prolific magic inventor and television consultant, Alan Rorrison, Prohibition Monte is the perfect fusion of three of magic’s most amazing card routines: The Two Card Monte The Anniversary Waltz, and The Torn and Restored Card This baffling 1920s prohibition-themed effect was inspired by Rorrison’s love for old con games and his fascination with legal loopholes. Here’s what happens: You explain that during the prohibition era, conmen used half-sized torn cards in an attempt to circumvent gambling laws that prohibited backstreet games using regular, full-sized playing cards. You remove two visually different torn half cards from your wallet and show them front and back. The spectator is asked to “follow the lady” and keep their eyes on the Queen. You cleanly and fairly place the Queen in your empty pocket and ask the spectator where the Queen is; in the hand or in the pocket? The answer seems SO obvious, but the spectator will consistently get it wrong. UNTIL you want them to win, of course To give the spectator an advantage, you allow them to sign the faces of both half-cards to make them easier to follow. You repeat the challenge but to their amazement (and increasing frustrations) they’re still deceived by which card is where! For the grand finale, both half-cards are placed between the hands of the spectator where the two counterparts fuse together to make a single, full size, mis-matched, double signed card! In the detailed video instructions, shot on location in a prohibition themed bar, Alan Rorrison equips you with all the knowledge required to begin performing this swindle as soon as humanly possible. Prohibition Monte can be added to your repertoire without sacrificing any of your current effects due to limited pocket space; Everything you need to perform the effect can be stored perfectly in any wallet in a single credit card slot! The phrase “packs small, plays big” is a cliche in magic, but Prohibition Monte is the epitome of this concept; you will always have a miracle at your fingertips at a moment’s notice. Alan Rorrison has this trick set up and ready to go in everything from his wallet to his gym bag and you will too! In fact, it’s so small it will even fit in that tiny pocket in your jeans that nobody ever knows what to do with (and you still wouldn’t even know it was there)! All of the necessary gimmicks required to begin performing this audacious effect come elegantly packed in a premium, gold foiled tuck box containing five long-lasting reusable gaffed cards and twenty final-reveal “souvenir” cards. The “souvenir” cards are designed to be signed during the performances and given away at the end. However, the trick works equally well without signatures, in-turn making the cards last infinitely longer across many repeat performances. If you prefer to perform the signed version, affordable refills will be available very soon. Expert playing card designer Destino has created each card with a subtle distressed style to fit the theme of the routine. The cards are printed on harder-wearing and thicker card stock to regular Bicycle cards to ensure they withstand your many performances. Built for workers by a worker, Prohibition Monte is the ideal addition to any close up magician’s set. It is easy to do, has a powerful “hook” and ends with an awesome souvenir for your spectator! Secure your very own Prohibition Monte and become a master of the con today. |

Obvious to magicians what's going on, but I think it's a really clever mixing of ideas that will fry spectators. Looking forward to this one.

"The phrase “packs small, plays big” is a cliche in magic..." Boy, that's for sure! I'd be happy to NEVER hear that phrase EVER again. Interested to hear more reviews on this one, and what sleights are required. Looks pretty good, though

Seems like Murphy's always makes a new thread 5-15 minutes after someone else starts one for a new effect. They should check the forum first haha.
I am interested in seeing what the 1914 keeps coming out with in the future. |

OK let me apologise for the language used... I do stand by it but I do get what your saying. So let me word it this way. This is something you can stick in your wallet with out sacrificing any space. Would I call it a game changer for the 2 card monte? To be honest yeah but again, I get it SO... This make the 2 card monte something that people want to see and you will want to perform.
There we go no buzz words. Just honesty, I really do carry this with me daily and use it pretty much the same. Marketing ******** aside this is something I love and I'm sure you will too |

This was a 'no brainer' purchase for me! Firstly, because it is an Alan Rorrison trick! Anything Alan brings out is clever, practical and incredibly well thought out. I have been purchasing effects by him since I first started out in magic and I've never, ever been disappointed! Secondly, produced by 1914 and Dee so the quality of the props is going to be awesome! Just watching the trailer and seeing pictures of what you get, I know it's going to be the best possible quality. Thirdly, its a total workers routine! I love giveaways too and often utilise them in my magic as a special keep sake for them! Fourthly, the price is amazing! £20 is a steal! All in all, I cant wait for it to come so I can start working on it for gigs when they open back up!

I was just telling my friend about it and those are the words I used. You get a monte, Siamese waltz and a transpo, a fun great routine that has many moments for the spectator to love. Also it’s trick that is paced out perfectly. I feel like you need to let soak at moments. Which I love. I hope the refills are affordable. Although I’ve been coming up with ways to use tape so they can sign the cards. Coming up with fake facts. The one I used that seemed to work and be believable was this. I said that in the early 1900’s while placing bets they would use a sticky clear film to have the player mark their card so if the cops did come they could peel it off so they wouldn’t know who the con. This ties into the end as well. Doesn’t make total sense but it didn’t seem to bother anyone. Still working on how to word this. So now if I want I could still hand the card out or take the tape off and go at it again. At first I was little afraid that someone would think that I was taking the tape off with the signature mid performance and switching stuff around but it wasn’t an issue. I think people are smart enough to realize that it would be almost impossible for you to do that because or how open this routine feels. |

How many magicians does it take to change a lightbulb? Regardless, for magicians darkness is a time for d'lite.

The phrase “packs small, plays big” was intended for stage effects, or at least stand up performances. You’d be hard pressed to perform this for 12 people, much less 120, and there’s no way you could use it for 1200. Unless of course you used a projector but then anything and everything could “play big” so the term would lose all meaning completely. But apparently it’s lost all meaning anyway if it’s now being used to describe a trick using half of a standard playing card, and purchasers are backing up such statements as being 100% correct. |

So would "Packs small and gets big reactions" be better worded for you?
A small side note also. I have performed this regularly for 100 or more people at a time. Itsnthe benefit of choosing a spectator to be the eyes and ears for the crowed. |

Yeah, actually I do like that wording much better Alan. That’s pretty good.
You should keep that in mind for the future. Not sure why you would choose to regularly perform this effect for a crowd of a hundred or more though. But if you can pull it off then more power to you. Too bad you didn’t include a bit of those performances on the trailer. BTW, I have nothing against your effect at all. I really like it a lot and purchased it right away and am now awaiting delivery. I think it’s a super clever combination of some classic effects. I'm thinking that this might just replace Garrett’s Stand Up Monte for me, and that’s a huge fav of mine so that’s saying a lot! |

I have this on the way and am looking forward to it. The presentation in the demo is probably a little long for me, so I'll probably change it somewhat, although I like the basic premise. I love routines that I can give out a souvenir to a spectator. Looking forward to the refills as well.

My copy arrived today. Alan teaches his full routine in great detail, and is well credited at the beginning. The explanation is well shot, in a suitably themed room. He explains his script, and also gives you alternative patter ideas if you want a shorter presentation, or one that isn't as tied into the conman theme. I would go as far as to say that Alan's summary after the full tutorial is more detailed than a lot of tutorials that come out these days. For me, as primarily a children's entertainer with some close-up here and there, packs flat, plays big is godsend. The phrase that is beginning to get on my nerves is 'I've been working on this for 'x' years. Didn't come up with it last week 'cos the gas bill has just come in, honest...'
On viewing the demo before purchase, I was a little concerned over the look of the cards - I thought that the half and half card looked a little jarring, however trusted both Alan and the 1914 having been a fan of his material in the past, and the excellent stuff the 1914 have put out so far. I needn't have worried - once folded the card looks fantastic (the card design has a slight aged look about it, not immediately clear from the demo), and the cards are excellent quality. It would have been nice to have a full deck of replacements, however only a minor quibble given the price of the effect, and they have advised that refills will be available at some point. Despite being a relatively simple routine, I've had no end of problems remembering Garrett Thomas' Stand Up Monte routine, so it largely sits in a drawer. I don't think I'm going to have the same issues here - Alan's tutorial is extremely clear, and the progression in the routine is very straightforward and logical - you're getting a fair amount of magic here with minimal moves. Alan also explains how to do the routine if you do not want to have the spectator sign the card. Final niggle - there is no option to download the tutorial video. I can understand a trick not having a downloadable video to cut down on piracy and the like if it is a download only with no props included, however when you have to buy the props to do the trick anyway, there's no logical reason not to be able to download it without having to resort to doing a screen grab or similar. That aside, I think this is a great trick, and the whole package is superb. You're effectively getting a torn and restored card, monte routine and anniversary waltz all in one, with a routine that can be adapted to suit your own style quite easily. |

Now that I’ve received the props...excellent effect and quality product all around. As with any effect of this nature you can make it as long or as short as you like. In the trailer Alan demos one routine but better to make up your own, right?
Love the half card concept. It makes it appear so different than a card trick. The ending of restoring the card but leaving you with an Anniversary Waltz type card to give away is sheer and utter brilliance IMO. Kudos to Alan for the concept and release of such beautiful cards to use to perform this. Give your Stand Up Monte routine a break and give this a spin. Because of the impossible object giveaway they will remember this one long after Stand Up Monte is forgotten. Well worth learning. Very happy with this purchase! |
