I would tell my younger self one important lesson I learned along the way and that is you will screw up sometimes you will know you messed up an effect and you will learn a very important lesson... most of the time you will be the only one who knows you goofed up the effect!

Good magic to all,

Eric

Thank you, Eric! So true and good to remember that everyone screws up...nobody is perfect and sometimes you just have to learn from it and move on...

Keep it simple. Simple effects, simple resets, and focus on engaging with people. Also, don't push yourself on someone who is not interested.

Absolutely! Not "forcing yourself" on people is so important... We are entertainers and WANT to entertain but there are those who simply don't want to be entertained, can't take it personally....it's simply how they are and that is absolutely fine.

After breaking the ice and introducing myself, I very plainly ask if they like magic - if they say "NO" I simply say that I understand and that there's a lot of people who don't so no worries. If they're the "right" kind of person (amicable, good natured) I will inquire as to why and I usually get some really interesting replies. As long as you're empathetic and not making it all about YOU, people are pretty open I've found

Figure out what can possibly go wrong with each routine and have an out rehearsed and ready to go. Also, for every gaffed coin routine, also have a non gaffed version rehearsed and ready to go. Pocket management and reset is gold.

Also, there might be a pandemic in your future so have something to fall back on. 😉

I'd tell my younger self to stick to the classics and stop trying to be clever

Invisible deck, ambitious card, card in hand change, daley aces, color monte, sponge balls, crazy mans handcuffs, 3 1/2 clubs

that's all I need for entertaining walkaround nowadays

The classics are classics for a reason - well said.
