I received a very old Douglas Magicland catalog the other day, and have been spending some time re-living fun memories.

One bit of ad copy really caught my eye, a full-page devoted to "The Miracle Cups and Balls (Rosini - Jim Sherman)". The price (postpaid!) was $13.50, making it one of the most expensive items in the catalog.

Here is one section from the copy:

"Now for the big climax. Without adding anything to the cups, taking anything away, or making any suspicious moves, the performer proceeds to pour from each of the cups a cocktail - mixed drink or some other liquid. The effect on the audience is beyond description. After he has filled the glasses, he can again pour three additional drinks from them if he chooses.

"Note these important facts about the trick. The cups are made of Hyb-Lum, a new non-tarnishable metal - they are self contained, being a marvel of ingenious construction - no body work - no gimmicks. Each cup loads itself with the liquid automatically within 10 seconds, and there are no false of suspicious moves...one of the most outstanding tricks ever offered to the magical fraternity."

Found a description of Hyb-Lum from a 1928 publication:

"...a new aluminum alloy which is claimed to combine lightness and strength to an unusual degree."

I believe these are National Magic cups.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

It's interesting and sounds like "self-contained" cups - it may be something else. Wonder how it feels working with those cups?

That's a very good question, James! Not to mention, I feel like I would worry about a cup 'springing a leak' during a performance, haha.

Sounds like it may not be so versatile in terms of different technical applications. Nevertheless it's a good set to add on to the collection.

Now I have a new magician's joke - "My cups sprung a leak during my performance"

"Hyb-lum is a recently marketed alloy of aluminum, in which the alloying elements, amounting to about 2 percent, are mainly nickel and metals of the chromium group."

Googling brought a few references from various publications, including this one from 1930.

How about the weight of the cups? Since it's aluminum, should be light in weight, right? (without the water)

I would agree with you on that, James.
