A magician has a stage to perform on and create entertainment. A mentalist has the spectators mind as the stage to entertain in.

That's an interesting point, Gumbini.
I did magic for 20 years before moving to mentalism. I would have said that my magic shows DID have a powerful audience involvement. I was doing comedy magic -- and by design, comedy only works when the audience is engaged. But that whole notion was blown when I saw how audiences reacted to mentalism. There's no comparison. The level of involvement AND the very powerful hook that people are fascinated with other people created a very powerful "mental stage" to work on. I found doing mentalism much more difficult that straight up magic -- but I also found that the extra work has paid off again and again. David

Unfortunately most magicians will never understand this or experiences this. Fortunately for you you had the works of Bob Cassidy and Richard Osterllind and their participation here who you learn from and talked to and help you in your learning process of mentalism how it differs from magic. I don’t see anyone today (other than Richard to a lesser degree these days) that still presents this and leads the community as predominantly.

I was extremely fortunate to Learn from Larry Becker on the finer subtleties of mentalism. And you're right we are very fortunate to have the DVDs that we do and the tutorials of those who have come before us. I do know I absolutely enjoy mentalism and although I will still perform magic here and there mentalism is without a doubt my number one love in this art.

Me: Hi. I am a mindreader,
Spec: OK but I am able to read my own mind thank you. That one comment opened my eyes (and my mind) and changed my whole approach to mentalism. |

That’s a great story. What did you change after that?
Please check regularly if you are becoming the type of magician Jerry Seinfeld jokes about. (This applies to mentalists as well.)

I am not swindling anyone as I have made no claims of special powers. People don't scream that they have been swindled because the man in the play isn't really the King of Spain, so why should it be any different for my act. "twinge of conscience"? None! As above, you watch my act and make up your own mind. I have made no claims, so my conscience is clear. There does seem to be a lot of high-brow waffle in many posts in this thread from some who think they are the second coming, really doing mentalism and/or helping people, but really you are an act; there to provide entertainment. Turn up, entertain, take money, go home. So the "swindle" and/or "twinge of conscience" should be clearly aimed at those convincing themselves that what they are doing is paranormal.

I've only had one person asked if I could really read their mind. My response to them was no I cannot really read your mind but I could really make you believe that I did.
I performed Devin Knights newspaper prediction and no amount of talking to this one lady would make her believe that I was not able to forecast the future. Her exact words were if that's a real newspaper that you have in your hands and I will go out and buy that copy today and if it matches that newspaper you cannot convince me you did not know how to predict the future. The reason I bring that up is it doesn't matter what you tell people they will believe what they want . Here is a saying that an instructor taught me years ago he said "Eric people will do whatever they do for whatever reason they do it." I simply apply that same saying but I have changed it a little I now say people will believe whatever they believe for whatever reason they believe it. Good magic to all, Eric |
