I am wanting to sell magic products after my shows to make more money... I have heard about magic books or pamphlets that you can stamp your contact info on the front and you can buy them in bulk. Where would I go for such an item?

Look for info on BOR items. BOR means back of room.
If you are looking to find something that you can print and personalize yourself, check out the instant author books by CJ Johnson (not an affiliate link): http://www.moreshowsmoremoney.com/reprint_rights.htm If you want books that are already printed, there are many sources, including this one commonly advertised in MAGIC Magazine, a company called Graphics2000 (not an affiliate link): http://www.circusweb.com/2000/index.html - Donald.

Check with Robbins. I know they used to have magic pamphlets suitable for re-sale. They were small pocket-sized booklets, but they were jam-packed with magic.

If you really want to learn how to make truckloads of money selling stuff at your shows, you need to pick up a copy of Rick Allen's MegaBux$ system. He's a master at things like the coloring book pitch. If anybody doubts whether or not the stuff works, the video of people literally running down the aisles to stuff money into Rick's hands ought to convince you.
I HIGHLY recommend it! And no, I don't make a dime off of letting people know about it! Hehehehehe! Here's a link to check it out; http://www.getmorebookings.com/MegaBux.html Trust me, you'll be glad you did! There is almost unlimited money to be made. He tells you exactly how to do it. Well worth the investment (You'll easily make it back in as little as ONE show, seriously!). Scott |

Also it pays to visit dollar stores and always keep your eyes open. You can also get some nice items from places like US Toy as well as Rhode Island Novelty.

Here are some tips;
Include your business card in each set. Demo something simple from the set in your show. Choose effects that are easy to master for the child. Choose effects with bright colours. Giveaway a few of the sets near the end of your show. Have someone besides yourself sell them. Be a good sport and stay a little while for a brief explanation of the effects. P.S. I include an effect that is just out of the reach of the child so as to offer them something to work towards and hopefully inspire them to read and practice. |

Josh Jay has a great idea. He sells custom decks of cards after his shows. Sure it's a bit of an initial investment, but the perceived value is pretty high so you can charge more than enough to make your money back.

I believe Paul Daniels on his lecture was saying that you could earn extra money at kids show by making up your own magic book and selling it.

I have just finished making my first CDROM to sell on cruise ships after my shows. Most entertainers make some good extra cash (usually to pay the bar bill) by having a product to sell. You have to submit your CD to the cruise company before you take them on, and give the shops on board a commission for selling them.
It is easier and cheaper to produce than a booklet and can look very professional. I am lucky I have the ability to write computer programmes etc. and so it looks very professional. Just another way to make a buck:))

I am also a published author of 'quirky' cat books and so do a seminar on 'readig your cats paws'. The book is published by Penguin in England and Australia and Ten Speed Press in the USA and Canada. It is such a crazy topic it goes over well on the ships.

The great thing about this product, is that he has tipped a great method to get people to buy your product at family events. It is diabolical, and I had never seen anything like it before in my 25+ years of doing shows, and being in the magic community. Rick shows this unique BOR sales approach happening at a circus venue (it is Rick, not a different Ringmaster), but clearly explains how to make it work in other family venues. I am totally convinced that this is a great way to do it at family venues... you don't have to be a part of a circus to make it work. (And he does have other footage, of other types of sales ideas happening in other venues, like adult speaking venues.) I think that this was insider information, because in my 25 years, I had never seen such a brilliant concept in BOR sales as Rick revealed. And you see footage of him doing it live, at several different venues, with different products. He shares the nuances between family nights BOR sales and adult speaking BOR, for example. He shares footage of one time where he made over $800 NET in Back of Room Sales (this was a regular occurance on that tour), and footage of other times when he made over $200 NET in Back of Room Sales. This was not rehearsed stuff with actors, but the real deal! There is great potential in what you learn and apply from this product (if you are willing to take ACTION on the ideas), and he gives you ALL THE TOOLS so you can make your investment back in one or two runs at BOR sales. The rest of the times you do BOR sales after recouping your investmant, are pure gravy! WooHoo! It it thinking like this that helped David Copperfield earn his $57 Million last year. Mr. Copperfield doesn't earn it all from people paying for show tickets. Much of David's income comes from BOR sales. But the ideas in this product are perfectly achievable to the regular magician, so you don't have to be as famous as David Copperfield to make BOR sales work for you. Rick Allen teaches you WHAT to say, which is really, really important. Some people plug their back of room products in the wrong way and this effects sales. Rick shows you the correct way, and even includes the scripts again spoken and in written form on the accompanying CD. He also provides several excellent resources for different products you can sell, and the accompanying CD includes a product that you can print out and customize instantly, then photocopy and sell immediately. So, it is basically a complete package, ready to make you money shortly after watching it. I can't recall the last product that was really designed to be so complete, and designed to help me make back my investment in very tangible ways shortly after reading or watching it. I recommend to others to buy this product, and take action on what Rick teaches. Thanks Scott for bringing this excellent product to everyone's attention! - Donald. P.S. I am not an "affiliate" and get no special favours for saying that I like this product. (I have several other products by Rick as well, and do know him somewhat.) I just want to help others know that Mega Bux$ exists, and state that I think it is great.

Simply put, Find the items you are going to sell and find a subtle tasteful way to insert their use in your presentations near the end of your shows.
Plug the Back of the room availability of the items near the end of the show. You can also sell them at intermission and foreshadow or outright mention the need to have your own for use in the upcoming presentation after the intermission. It works for us~R2 |

Hi Donald:
So is Rick's Megabuxs package just for the modern day performer or could his methods be employed just as easily by a 1880's period Medicine Show Character. Martin

Rick's techniques could easily fit your character, Martin. Most of them were passed down from showman to showman to showman from WAY back anyway.
Rick also does a medicine show (amongst MANY other things!). He's "been there, done that" for more than 30 years. He knows what he's talkin' about! I KNOW for a fact you could make a lot of money using his techniques. I know it sounds like a big investment, but if you work it, you should easily be able to make it back in as little as ONE show. You get to watch Rick make over $800 in less than 10 minutes on the video. No stooges, no set-up, just real people giving Rick real money. He offers the best guarantee in the business. There is ZERO risk to you. Watch and learn from the master! Scott |

I think we have to just make it clear here that 'uploading extras' on children's parties is an entirely different subject than selling to say cruise guests, theatre audiences, fairground audiences etc.
With the latter you are selling to members of the audience. With the former you are selling to the Hirer. This topic has been dealt with somewhere in the Little Darlings Section. |

Yes, this topic is about BOR (back of room) sales, not upselling your services or selling packages that include extras like giveaway balloon animals or giveaway magic tricks.
It is also more for the non-birthday-party market, and of course, anyone who does this must establish permission first, before the event, before doing any BOR sales at any time. However, BOR sales can be done at some children's / family events, such as school socials or library shows, if handled tactfully. Rick does cover BOR sales in his course, not upselling your services to the customer. He also covers ways of using BOR to help certain customers afford your show, creating win-win situations. - Donald.

I would imagine that you have to be very careful and selective of which venues to do this at. I can well imagine that there would be some bookers who would look askance at outright blatant selling like this.
For a speaker BOR is standard practice and I do know that for Carnival type venues you can get away with this. Naturally if you are promoting your own show this is ideal. You might possibly get away with this at a fair or festival but I think I would be careful. I would be very wary of doing this at a corporate function. Even if they give permission I would be nervous. I do remember a well known two person mental act selling things at a resort and the entertainment manager got a mite irritated making the remark "this isn't a flea market, you know" Still, I am very interested and may well order the thing from Rick myself at some point. |

In this case, I wonder if it was made clear that they would be selling, or whether it was made clear the advantages to the customer of letting the performer sell? Here's another Café thread some members might find interesting: Add-ons... they love them! That thread is about BOR sales in a different way. I had some of my comments on it edited, but I thought bringing items to a birthday party to sell after a show, was a poor idea, expecially without permission. - Donald.
