He said he is working on a book and hopefully will be out by the end of the year. Big fan of his also. His Acaan Automated is excellent.

I just bought this - it's a great method and I look forward to playing around with it! It's just as advertised and no knuckle-busting moves. A great use of seven bucks!

The problem is fixed.
For those who have purchased it, what do you think? Pretty good, right? |

Obviously this is not as magical as if the card was simply named. But it is impromptu, so I think that is an acceptable compromise. I like the method, and can imagine using it in other contexts.

If you were to combine this with Mystery Mark's (Mark Hilkemeijer) "Instantaneous", then you could have them "just name a card." Mark took a lot of flack on the Café years ago, but he's got some really good work.

I just purchased this from Skywardmagic.com with no issues at all. Email with download link arrived within about a minute of my purchase, before my Paypal receipt arrived. I look forward to checking it out!

If you are performing for just one person, I agree, you should have some motivation. I would ask them to place the card between their hands for a couple seconds. Don't even explain. Just have them do that and move on with the effect. Then, in performance, you simply refer to their card as the card they are thinking of and the number they are thinking of. If you start with them thinking of a card, it only helps the illusion, it doesn't detract from it. Of course, it has to flow naturally and feel motivated. The reason it is powerful is that when you ask someone to think of a card, rather than pick a card, they start with a mental connection to a card that perhaps means something to them. maybe it is their favorite number and a suit that appeals to them. If they pick a card, they don't have a mental connection to it. This doesn't mean that pick a card tricks are no good, but some effects, like ACAAN, are stronger with a "thought of card". Jeff McBride would say: "Don't discount these psychological subtleties". Watch the way Joseph presented the effect and you will notice that the time delay that included the cards being turned into a mess DOES alter your perception of what happened before. This is common psychology. If you present a small detail, followed by LARGE details, especially something that seems out of the ordinary, like making a mess of the cards, frequently the small details get forgotten, or misremembered. It is the psychological version of Dai Vernon's large movements vs small movements which works 99.9% of the time. If they do talk about the effect later, they are not likely to remember every detail, so they will fill in the missing details. If they thought of the 3 of clubs, for example, because three is their favorite number and they like clubs because they remind them of good luck, that will reinforce the notion that they thought of the card. You do whatever works for you, but give some of these ideas a try. I worked on my ACAAN for 10 years before I presented it to Jeff McBride who suggested some significant changes, including starting with a "thought of card". My original reaction was defensive. After all, I perfected it over ten years! However, I tried his suggestions and the reactions increased significantly. KJ |

I wonder why in the tutorial he haven’t teach how to put the chosen card at the number nominated by the spectator?

I bought this recently from Skyward and it was easily the best $7 I have spent. As a rank amateur/ hobbyist, I found the method and presentation very well explained and was able to perform it with only a small amount of practice. It will take a while longer to perfect the presentation (as always) but I am confident that this is a keeper. I love the seemingly chaotic nature of the process and will also use the very easy control he shows us in other tricks / effects. You could easily substitute the control shown for your favourite one, but this one works a treat.
I also like Mitchell Kettlewell’s Ice Cold ACAAN and enjoy performing that one as well. I do it using Mnemonica stack, rather then the suggested method as this allows me get the spectator to count down the cards face up.

Just a quick follow up note regarding my previous post. I have since read the criticism of Ice Cold ACAAN on this forum and whilst I won’t attempt to defend it, I will stick with my view that I like it - in Mnemonica per my post. I have since read a bit more and “discovered” (with the Cafés’ help) that I am basically now doing the exact ACAAN that Barrie Richardson outlined in Theater of the Mind (p. 257). Interesting insofar as Barrie’s presentation and method has a much better way of covering the key move (IMO) so it was worth hunting for. It also proves, once again, that the originals are usually hard to beat... Thanks!

I have progressed a bit in my magic journey, and now understand more about the importance of how spectators might (mis-)remember an effect later. A very simple motivation for having a "thought of" card removed is so the spectator can show it to the rest of the audience. This is likely to be a "psychologically invisible" action. |
