Hand the key out for inspection and EVERYTHING can be examined fully.
Take a regular key from your pocket or keyring, and let a spectator hold it and then study it. They see and feel it is a regular key before they slowly close their hand around it... keeping it in full view the entire time. The magician does NOT touch the key again until after the effect is finished. The spectator now chooses a random celebrity or superhero. They could just think of one or choose one from a stack of business cards, a list of famous addresses or even some Top Trump Cards. Once the selection is made the spectator can now open their closed hand to reveal the key. It has visibly changed from a regular key to a 3D sculpt of the superhero they selected. They key is now handed out for inspection and everything can be examined fully. Celebrikey is a modern classic suitable for all skill levels. https://www.murphysmagic.com/Product.aspx?id=69252 |

What I like: compact and portable, happens in their hands, simple to understand, strong visual moment.
What I don't like: obvious logical disconnect between "why a key?" and the key morphing to the superhero. I don't think it would be hard to address, however, with creative thought. But "why" is the magic happening? Why a key to a superhero? That's the question. Of course, maybe I'm overthinking and it's not supposed to be more than a fun/cute trick. But once addressed, this would be a nice effect. I also think it would be nice to think about morphing back ("hey, even illusions don't last forever" kind of thing) in an off-beat moment, going back to the start to a regular key. Almost like a mirage the spectator experienced, if they were even sure it ever really did ("Okay, wait...you saw it looked like Batman, too, right? What the heck!") In the end, you know me, I like new magic toys. Makes me wanna get this. That being said, soon my keychain will be too big for my pocket. Especially with Ignition, Flite, Michael Murray's Leather Fish, MonKey, leg through vacuum-cleaner (that last one doesn't count though, because I still haven't found the right carabiner to add it)... |

Ha, ha, yeah me too. All the aforementioned plus Freakey, Keymaster, and Departure.
I agree about why a key. Be nice to have a preceding effect with an identical key to lead into Celebrikey. Oh what’s one more thing added to my almost forklift sized keychain? Plus, I’m curious what other celebrities might be added along with Batman. I’m of a certain age and often get quite puzzled looks asking a friend to name their favorite superhero. 😃 |

What happens if they select Spider-Man which is a distinct possibility along with many other superheroes?

With a tad more imperfections it would be much more interesting.
This gimmick just looks so made up and professionally produced. Don‘t like it sorry. |

Matthew Wright is an incredible magician and creator of terrific effects and routines but this one does not grab me. Maybe this one is meant more for teens? I will show it to my two teen sons in fact and ask what they think of it. Michael

Email I received from a magic dealer says “Come with almost an hour of online instruction which covers a ton of different handlings, ideas, and ways to force Batman. I rambled a bit, but I think a seed is there somewhere for a slightly different presentation. But you don't have to. Looks like a fun trick to me. And like Luca says, quite commercial.

I showed it to my 16 year old son. He did not like it.

Tricks like this I just use a stack of my business cards showing on the back of the card different superheros then I tell them to say stop as I riffle upwards with the packet of
biz cards . Of course they stop on Batman ( short card) works all the time ! |

I would suggest that you script it with interraction. Ex: "When I was a kid, I loved to read superhero comic books and watch them on TV. Did any of you?" Turn to someone who seems somewhat into it, not the most, not the least. Say: "I always liked the ones that had a human side and a superhero side. I want you to name some superheroes. Does one come to mind?" Someone who is somewhere in the middle of "knows nothing about superheroes" and "knows everything", is likely to say either Batman or Superman. Obviously, if they name Batman, you don't ask for more. In that case, you say: "I really liked Spiderman, but you picked Batman". If they say Superman, you ask them to name another. You then just do a magician's choice by asking them to imagine they are holding Batman in one hand and superman in the other. "Hand me one". I do like that this is on a key. It makes it super easy to carry around and the switches would be super easy with keys. KJ |

Nathan,
I also like your patter about the key (i.e.: "locking and unlocking things, even our childhood memories"), and I think you could incorporate it into your patter while they are holding the key. This way, you get the elements from your patter into the routine, which adds a lot of color to the routine, but it also flows smoothly and is done in conjunction with the magic, not all as setup before the magic. Great thinking, Nathan. I love the elements of your patter! KJ |

Yup. Very bad. Can't understand why you want people to start distrusting you or be diappointed when they receive your effect...
Please check regularly if you are becoming the type of magician Jerry Seinfeld jokes about. (This applies to mentalists as well.)
