Does anyone know where is the best place for a beginner to learn a good coins across routine?

Probably every close up magician who ever lived has developed a coins across routine. So, you have a lot to choose from! The New Modern Coin Magic by Bobo has a bunch of basic coin magic. I remember starting out by performing a coins across routine from Al Schneider in his book, Al Schneider on Coins. The New York Coin Magic Seminar DVD series has a lot of different routines, including volume one, a 2 disc set with over 20 routines from Roth, Gallo, Latta, Harbottle, and myself. The entire series is available on dvds through mymagic.com and on downloads from vanishingincmagic. I believe L&L has a DVD in the World's Greatest Magic series on Coins Across. My book, Rubinstein Coin Magic, has an entire chapter on the subject. I have come out with a commercial coins across routine MIGRATE, on the market now, that uses props to make it more interesting ( https://youtu.be/gGjMtW1DLjA ). If you like to use gaffs, Roth's most popular effect is his Shell Coins Across, found both on volume one of the NYCMS DVD series, as well as his own DVDS. If you want to perform for a larger group, there are many Three Fly coins across routines, done with dollars at chest level, some with gaffs, some without. Many people like Darryl's version, mine is on the NYCMS DVD and in my book. Hope this helps!
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

Daryl did a nice video download for his Three Fly routine. For about $10.00 its worth the price...it gives you some different moves and options to choose from for your routine and it does it without any "special" coins.

I feel that every beginner should invest in a copy of Stars of Magic. If you only learned every effect in that book you could have a rich magic well to draw from. It is one book I always go back to and think over and over again.

Michael Ammar's "Complete Intro to Coin Magic," DVD has a a great learning effect, "Simple Coins Across," I think it's called, that is well worth it, as is the whole DVD.

I think it is good to learn David Roth's Shell Coins Across. Rubinstein mentions the sources above.
Why? Because this coins across is almost the ultimate. Even if you end up with another one, few coins across routines are so great with angles, lack of clothing requirements, and avoid strange looking sleights. So it is good for me to use this as a standard, to compare my own routine with it, as I improve it and innovate. The move in this routine is so clean, I showed it to a magician months ago, and he couldn't detect the move, even after I told him. That is what you want in coins across. Because frankly, too routines many have some strange moves, bad angles, and just aren't clean enough. Learn Roth's Shell Coins across, do it, and you will see some thinking they truly saw magic, and not a trick. A good standard to go by. |

I agree with CM here. I think that Mr Roth's version with a s**** just looks cleaner than any gaffless version I've ever seen. It's only an opinion though.

Craig Petty has a lovely gimmick free 4 coins across into a spectators hand that's really nice, I have performed it for lay people personally and it plays very strong.

For a while just work on basics...not even whole routines. Coins of any stripe takes time. Doesn't happen over night. Walk before you run etc.

David Roth's coins across routine is taught in ECMME volume 1. For me is the best.
