I also have to hardly dissagree with the Propdog guys.
The book is very good for what it is. The tricks are mostly pretty easy in method and probably you already have a trick in your repertoire that is similar or the same method wise (Sandwich / Ambicious Card / Transposition / Triumph / Prediction of a chosen card / Coin Vanish). So if you are looking for something completely new in method you wont find it here. Also If you are searching for a lot of different methods /card sleights or new tricks rather get something like Royal road or card college. This book is about presentation and interaction. It teaches you how to get everything out of a simple slight. How to make the Experience for the spectator memorable and as magical as possible. It does not trivialize magic, it elevates it. The spectator will never see the method so for him the presentation itself is the magic. A lot of magicians focus way to much on method and neglect the presentation (a lot just suptitel what they are doing). This book takes the presentation to the forefront and focuses on what the spectator will experience, and how you can influence his experience just trough your words. So for a spectator the tricks will be completely different and new to your old stuff, even if for you they will be the same. Overall I really liked it. If you are searching for inspiration or new presentations with a philosophical touch it is excellent. If you want to learn tricks that are new to you as a magician you won't be happy. Only negative is that the price is maybe a little bit high for an amateur or hobbyist. |

Well you will not find it in this book! Remember a lot of what Ben Earl is describing in the book are anecdotes of what worked for him.
This is not 'presentations' in the way Eugene Burger or Tommy Wonder describe [along with lines that will work for most people] plus this book is $70.00!

Some people like it some don't but it has no influence on the material that is tought. Yes the presentations are not the kind of fairy tales or long stories about how your grandfather showed you your first magic trick. The are shorter more theoretical and also more philosophical. But that said there are brilliant ideas between these pages. he gets a 3 Pahse Effect out of one simple coin vanish and the idea for the last words (The last part is when you *** *** then the coin would be truely vanished) is amazing. Perfect wording if you don't want to do a full coin routine just a single effect. The Gift and the secret both give the spectator a choce to keep a mysterious object or break the seal an look for themselves which would destroy something. Awesome idea for in one case just a simple card reveal. The Transposition is the first where 50% takes place in the spectators mind. I have never seen something like this and it playes with the spectators thinking and therefore their reality. To apreciate those thing truely you have to take the viewing angle of the spectator. For a magician those effect are not really impressive but four your audience the'll surely be. Sometimes just a presentational idea is worth way more then a methode. of course you can get ideas from watching magicians, and I can only recommend that. I got a lot of ideas from just watching Derren Browns Shows

One point to the presentations. On the old L&L DVD's there is a ton of great presentation. And also if you watch magicians (AGT/Blaine/Bronw TV shows) they have great presentations you can steal. But most of those are very specifically written onto the performer. They don't suit everybody; just very few people with a similar style.
In Inside Out the presentations are way more adaptable. The lines fit nearly every performer no matter if stage close up and also nearly every character. They might not be as epic as Derren Browns Medallion and story about his grandfather (which is by far the best version of this age old grandfather cliche). But you can actually perform them and include them in your act without the feeling that you are just a copy of the original creator. But I agree on the point that the book is a little bit expensive if you also have stuff like Ken Webbers Maximum Entertainment and Scripting Magic Vol 1+2 that are out there. |

Okay we will have to agree to disagree! I just did'nt see any lines that captured me in the way the opening lines of Eugene Burger [If you don't have 'Mastering the art of magic' run and buy it when you can! Or the Godlike Tommy Wonder. None of them use long stories or fairytales!
I hope this book is reviewed in 'Genii' sometime.

They both are magicians I absolutely love to watch and I enjoy every second of it. I would suggest anybody to pick up their work too. Sadly in the last years I did not really came across comparable masters of the art. If someone has to choose what to pick up (Inside out or the L&L DVD Sets or Books of Tommy Wonder and Eugene) That would be difficult and would depend on personal preference. It is always hard to compare modern releases to the best of the past ;-) |

I say: watch this video. If you like it, if it resonates with you, buy the book. If you think it’s rubbish - stay away! 😀

ADDENDUM: Derek Ostovani uses this actual effect and presentation as his opener. He doesn't put the card in the forhead thought; he puts it in a different way. Check out the beginning of his lecture.
