I do a lot of subway magic so levitating dollars or humming bird cards work great but ever since 9-11 ppl have been a lot more unwilling to stand in crowded areas. that and I'm not your average magician. I'm a 16 year old african american male and as much as I like to think ppl will see past that , its sadly not the case. so I try to seem as un-scary as possible. I want to add some escapology to my act so if anyone could recommend some good books/dvds it would help alot..

I know it's a "cross over" post, asking about escapes in a street show, but you might find more answers in our "All Tied Up" forum.
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Hip-hop, I have the same problem (I'm 18 (but look 16) and no-one wants to pay attention to a little kid). How do you get around it? I just try to exaggerate my character until I draw them in, then use my usual persona during the show.

You really do have to relate to yoour audience.
If you can't connect, you are just aren't going to get the kind of hats that others do. If you are young, be "cute", if you are older be "clever" , but everyone has to find their own hook. My hook, is to be funny, direct, and far more street hip than folks think a distinguished looking God talking greybeard would be. I work hard at being as some have called me, (A Biblical phrase) appearing as gentle as a dove, yet being as wise as a serpent. So I present a dichotomy. I appear one way, and come across another. I am an interesting puzzle to my audiences. And now they are hooked. I am not what they expecrt. To you young fellows I say, your problem is temporary. You will age fast enough. So at some point, people will not avoid you, or ignore you, just because you are young. But unless you find your hook. Create your individual indentity and find out how to relate to the audiences, you could find yourself at 25 saying, they don't relate to me becuase I am this or that. And at 45 and 65, you might be saying the same thing. But get real dog! It is your job to make yourself approachable, unthreatening, entertaining, and interesting. It isn't the audiences's job, it is yours alone. Take responsibility for it. That is the job, if you choose to accept it, and to work at it. It doens't matter how old (or young) you are. It matters how interesting, intriguing, entertaining and uniquely you, that you are. BroDavid
If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.
