Samsung claims it can deactivate smart TVs by serial number over the internet.
For whatever reason. Because.

It's getting tough to not buy a smart device. Samsung also makes cable boxes, phones, air conditioners, microwave ovens...

As a precautionary measure and in line with the recommendations from the Presidential announcement and the guidelines from the Department of Health we have taken the decision to reduce the number of staff at our Call Center. https://www.samsung.com/za/support/ Quote:
The announcement comes in the wake of violent unrest in South Africa in July. At that time, an undisclosed number of Samsung TVs were stolen from one of Samsung’s warehouses, according to the report. https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theat......len-tvs/

I assume Apple and Samsung cellphones also have kill switches?

I heard Samsung is using the 'kill switch' to brick stolen TVs as they do stolen phones.
Back in the 1980s, I knew a fellow who could kill TVs and radios etcetera in his area with a microwave oven that he adapted, which was useful to the local bank robbers apparently.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

So I called Apple, reported the phone stolen, and it was shut off and completely blocked. I got a new phone and backed it up from the Cloud! I imagine, he sold my phone to someone who could crack it, erase it, and resell it as "used."

FYI: https://www.apple.com/icloud/find-my/
cracking is not so simple - but the parts are expensive ... so perhaps a chop shop?

Probably. Not important to me, I have a new phone and still have my info.
