Has this ever happened to you? Or something like it?

One night while performing in a restaurant I pulled out a deck (I thought it was a regular deck). I proceeded to do some tricks. I held the cards face up to remove all the Aces for a four Ace revelation. I noticed that there were two Ace of Hearts so I decided to use the Queens. I then noticed that there were two Queen of Clubs. As I scanned the deck quickly I noticed there were quite a few duplicate cards. I quickly did some misdirection and moved to another trick.

Later in the week I examined that deck realizing that many of the cards were duplicates. I realized that this may be a trick deck. But I could not figure out what its purpose was. Now I'm stuck with it.

Then this happened....

I perform a card to pen cap which means having the card signed and mercury folding it and producing it from a pen cap. The implication is that after a while some of the cards are now missing. No problem, until one night when I started to perform a new trick I found in Expert Card Technique called Crystal Thought. Great trick.

It involves placing a card on the table and asking the spectator to name any card. A few minutes later (following some by-play) the card they named is on the table. The one that you placed there earlier.

Well, I forgot that some of the cards were missing. So, when I went to pull their thought of card out of the deck it wasn't there.

I guess I had not planned properly that night for my choice of card effects.

Similarly...

I had spilled a drink of some sort on my King of Spades, and had consequently removed it from the deck. Much later, while performing a trick very similar to yours, they named the King of Spades. Eureka! I turned over the card face-down on the table--"Well, this isn't your card..." then flipped the entire deck face up and spread it out--"but neither are any of these."

Priceless.
