Yes, there is video capture software that works with cards that will allow you to play the VHS and record it to a computer file. I have a setup like this with an old (still working!) VHS machine and when I need to, I can pull something off an old tape.

When I originally set my system up, I added a video capture card that drops into a slot in the PC - it has the plugs on the back so the VHS connects to the computer. Now I see small units on Amazon that can connect via USB, so they can work with laptops. The range is from $10.00 to about $35.00 for the basic units. I would probably avoid the cheapo ones!

Search for "video capture card" and you'll see the choices. The reviews on Amazon have good tips on what software people used to get results. It's a DIY project, you have to be willing to futz with the setup to get it right.

Forgot to mention that this is a bit easier now than it used to be - the little units on Amazon are designed for video streaming, so they can take a video camera and route it through the computer. Then you just find the right software to record the VHS stream (Ha! Never thought I'd see those two words together!) So the fact that you can get a plug & play unit for $35.00 is because there's a market for them.

I recently sent a few VHS tapes to a company named, Southtree. I paid for everything online and then they sent me a postage paid box where I sent my VHS tapes. Everything came back professionally transferred onto DVD. The only problem I have is the turnaround time. Took about 2 months for me to get the DVDs but the quality was very good.

I don't think we're that far off from DVDs going the way of the VHS--make sure to save straight video files to a hard drive, too!

I have a Panasonic DVD Recorder (DMR-EZ48V) that records VHS tapes right onto blank DVDs (this machine has slots for both).

It's hooked to my TV, so I can watch as I record.

I used this machine to transfer most of my VHS magic tapes to DVDs - only problem is that a few of the magic tapes are copyproof, and I could not make DVDs of them.

I see these machines in thrift shops once in a while, and the price is usually pretty low.
