Joshua,
Since you posted this suggestion I've been thinking... In my case it could be negative to have a sub. Let me try to explain. There's a pizzaria called Circus Pizza. They have a very beautiful circus appearance, with playstation for kids and a party room, where the parties take place, of course. We (my brother and I) are their magicians. So every party, almost 2 a week, we are there working. If I appoint a sub and they like his work more than mine, I could lost my "job", you agree with me, don't you? So, in this case, what to do? |

Romulo,
All the more reason to control who substitutes for you. Yes, the best option is not to use a sub, and to fulfil all your dates yourself. But if you cannot be there on a night when you are expected, I strongly feel it is better to arrange a sub than to go "dark," i.e. have no replacement at all. The management counts on consistency to make your performance there worthwhile. Unless they have specifically told you they don't want anyone there in your absense, they most likely expect you to arrange for a substitute, since people will be expecting magic. As far as the concern that the management might prefer your substitute to you, all I can say is that your responsibility to the restaurant dictates that you find the best entertainment you can to fill in for you. If you are worried that they will be better than you, just do all you can to make the management love you. The management at the restaurant I perform at likes my substitute very much. But they LOVE me. |

Joshua,
You're right again! Also what really matters is to show the management you care whether they will have a magician, and you did your best to find someone really good to replace you. It's a negative that you can turn in a positive. I just hope my management LOVE me too. Only the time will tell... |

Romulo,
Perhaps you haven't considered something. You mentioned that it's not common to see restaurant magicians working. That in itself should drive up your price. It's supply and demand. If there aren't many of you then the supply is low. Of course if the demand is also low then it's up to you to fix that with marketing. Also, although you charge low by our standards, you have to consider the economy. Maceió is a very poor country. A 5 star hotel is about $50 a night. Holiday Inn is about $23. A 5 star hotel in any big city is going to be a couple hundred a night at least. Holiday Inn in New York is $150. So it appears that the price of living (from what I can find on the internet) is about one quarter what it is in the US, which means that your $23 an hour is more like $90 an hour. You might not be doing too bad. Everything is relative. |

Rikbrooks,
When we offer our magic services managements are reluctant because they never saw it before and don't know whether works. So I cannot rise my price as much as I would like to. I have to get the chance to show that it really works and rise my price when the opportunity comes. As for the marketing, we (my brother and I) are the only magicians on the media. We had small participations on local tv programs and every Saturday we are on the radio. Yes, doing magic in a Blitz. Blitz is a team of animation people (Mickey, Minie, etc.) that work in commercial establishments to promote them over the radio. And we do magics there and have our name being advertised on the radio. Take a look at my web site http://www.geocities.com/irmaossalles, it's in Portuguese, of course, however there's a lot of photos of us. As for the price, you're perfect right. The minnimum wage in Brazil is R$ 260,00 ($84.96). R$ 260,00 / 30 days = R$ 8,66 per day. R$ 8.66 / 8 working hours = R$ 1,08 per hour ($0.35 per hour). Looking at this pespective, $23.00 for 2 hours presentation is great, isn't it? My great advantage is that I don't depend on magic to survive. I work for a dairy company as foreign trade coordinator and I'm very well paid for that -considering our living standards as you put it. Thanks for your economic point of view and nice you read about my city. If you have the opportunity come to Maceió - The Water Paradise - as it is known. |

Romulo, I think that you are being paid very well indeed. It's a testiment to your skill. I enjoyed my read of your city. It sounds quaint and a little sad with the young people leaving for brighter financial opportunities.

Rik,
What's the going rate in Austin? Our cost of living here in San Antonio is lower. Thanks Wayne

Romulo-
I just saw this tread and have to agree with Rik, you must be doing something right to earn what you are down there. Anyone else have information on what they charge outside of the U.S.? I'm a U.S. performer, but curious to know what happens in other places. |

Seems like $50.00 an hour is about average.
May your day be filled with MAGIC!
