This is my first post here and I'm not sure how much luck I'm going to have. I've been a lover of magic my whole life but only started learning the secrets about a year ago. I started out with several books and a video, and have picked up 'the basics' to get me started.
There are a few tricks I perform that involve gaff cards, and to keep costs to a minimum, I have tried making my own - not as simple as I thought! Does anyone have any tips/idea's/suggestions on how I can split playing cards (i.e. the front from the back) without ripping them ? If anyone has a tip to offer I would be very greatful. Many thanks. |

Very funny, I was just posting a message about the same subject in the Pick a card forum.
I heard the Lickety Split DVD is great fro learning the technique, but I haven't seen it. I am ordering the lecture notes today, so I'll let you know what I find out. |

David,
I ordered the notes this afternoon. I know Martin is lecturing so he won't be able to send the book for a couple of days, but I'm looking forward to it. In another posting, someone mentioned using water to split cards. Do you know anything about this? |

Here is the method I use and it works very well consistantly without a single tear:
Roll the corner of the card onto a hard surface. This will cause the layers to seperate. Now, depending if you want to split the face or the back you proceed as follows. The card is made up of three layers, if you want to remove the face, once the corner is already split, lay the card face down on a table. the face of the card should consist of one layer thick while the back and middle section are held together. now this is important, starting from the corner of the pre-split card, push down hard on the single layer (face)and slowly pull the other two layers away firmly, but gently in a diagonal fashion. Remember, never to let go of the single layer while you are pulling the two layers away. As the card split progresses slowly move you fingers from the corner of the single layer up until the card has been completely split. Always keep firm pressure on the single layer as you move along. Hope this helps If anything is unclear, feel free to PM me. Fayaad |

Quote: I've not heard it myself but it seems logical. If the card is wet then I guess it would split much easier. I suppose you then have to make your gaff and leave it pressed between heavy books or something until it dries out.... I'll try it and let you know how I get on

I got an e-mail from Marty today and the book has been sent. Perhaps in a couple of days all our questions will be answered

David,
From my experiences, "dry" splitting is the way to go. Once the cards are wet, no matter how carefully you dry them they just don't look the same. Fayaad's method is well written, and works great. Remember what he said, you're not peeling the face from the body of the card, you're peeling the body off the face. Lifting the thin layer and trying to pull it off will fail nearly every time. With his technique(well, technically not his, it's been written in many other places as well), you will still lose a few thin peels as the last corner has a nasty habit of fighting you, but as long as you have 51 others to try, go for it!
No trees were killed in the making of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
