Hey Everyone
I thought I would clear up a point that keeps getting raised. ![]() This is not 'Choose Me', and here are the differences: __________________________ CHOOSE ME Six cards are displayed. One has the phrase "Choose Me", the others are blank. The cards are mixed, writing side down, and the participant makes a selection based on intuition. That blindly selected card is always the "Choose Me" card. __________________________ IT'S YOUR CHOICE Four cards are displayed, each with differing detailed information. One is selected knowingly and purposefully by the participant. When the card is turned over, it proves without a doubt that this card was the only one that could be chosen. This is followed up by demonstrative proof of how the participant has been influenced to make this choice. __________________________ THE DIFFERENCE The significant differences here are that with 'Choose Me' a blind decision is being made instead of a conscious one. Also, without going into too much detail on an open forum, there are times in 'Choose Me' where additional manipulation is required 'behind the scenes'. Whereas in 'It's Your Choice' the straightforward method NEVER CHANGES, and there is no mental calculation to be done on the part of the performer. For the participant, the choice has personal meaning, yet the performer can seemingly prove the method by which the participant was guided to that decision. __________________________ CONCLUSION These are two completely different methods. These are two completely different types of presentation. If you own 'Choose Me', then you will be learning an entirely new skillset from reading 'It's Your Choice'. In fact, you may also find that there to be an excellent correlation between the two effects. Starting off with a blind choice for the participant with 'Choose Me', then moving onto an informed and meaningful decision with 'It's Your Choice'. Hopefully, that has helped clear up the notion that these two effects are thematically or methodologically linked. Thanks to all those who asked about this, as it has helped me realise how people may perceive the effects as being similar and has allowed me to address this issue
Cheers, Paul

‘It’s Your Choice.’ A Review by Marc Paul
Thank goodness the mentalism community has Paul Brook in it! Because he absolutely understands what our business is about and he’s happy to teach all of us what he knows. Paul’s latest book is a large tome on just a single trick, an effect that you may already know. If that puts you off already then good, because this book is not for you…move along. If on the other hand you want to understand how a busy professional mentalist takes an existing effect and crafts it into a powerful, multifaceted, entertainment packed, audience pleasing ‘worker’ then this book is most definitely one you must read. I don’t think I’ve ever read a mentalism book that goes into so much detail about a single effect and it’s a fascinating read. Paul passionately describes his journey of discovery with this particular routine, in fact he describes it as an obsession and he’s probably right! It’s an old effect buried away on an old DVD. It’s cute and fun and that’s what first attracted Paul’s attention. If I’m honest I know this effect and I too have played with it and thought it was…okay. But whereas I put it to one side and forgot about it Paul’s brain clicked into gear and started his journey. His creative process and how and why he incorporated each of his changes is fully described and this is worth its weight in gold to any mentalist who wants to get more creative with their material. Over the years Paul has shaped that ‘okay’ effect into a powerful, engaging and commercial piece of mentalism that has tremendous value to the real world performer. That value is its entertainment potential and its flexibility. This routine can have so many different presentations applied to it and Paul fully describes LOADS! Whoever you are and whatever you do as a mentalist you will find a presentation here that works for you. Paul uses this is every type of environment from trade shows to weddings and corporate events and he has adapted the effect to become a bespoke piece of entertainment. He’s made it look like he has created this effect just for particular clients event…this is one of the reasons why he is one of the top paid mentalists in the UK. I was simply stunned by the amount of variations and presentations that Paul has created. This is a book packed with ideas and any one of them you could add directly into your close-up mentalism set today. If it’s not already apparent I’m a big fan of Paul’s work and if you want to earn money performing mentalism you must study Paul’s material, he knows! Get this book and you’ll understand so much more about what makes good, commercial, real world mentalism. It’s a great book. BTW: When you do get this book make sure you check out Paul’s ‘Hidden Persuaders’ for each presentation…audiences LOVE this type of stuff! Marc Paul |

I'm pleased that you have not only enjoyed my past works, but have successfully used them in the real world. For me, the most disappointing thing, when I purchase mentalism, is when I instantly know that it is a pipe dream that has never seen the light of day and couldn't be repeatedly used at a professional gig. I like my releases to provide a definite tool that can be successfully used by the professional mentalist as well as the casual perfomer. That way if the casual perfomer wishes to take a step into the paid performance world, the material will stand strong and work. Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul - one question: Your site states that the first 100 people to order will received graphic files required to print custom cards? Does this mean that if we order outside of the first 100, we don't get these files? They seem kind of fundamental and belong with the book...

I am working on a review as we speak. To answer the question above, the majority of the routines are designed to be hand written instead of professionally printed. That’s part of the comedic element.

Paul Brook kindly sent me a review copy of his book “It’s Your Choice”. He didn’t ask anything in return, but simply wanted to run it past me. (Yes, he is a friend, but this is a totally unsolicited review – and just my views on it.) As I settled down to work my way through it, I realised others might want to hear something about it. Many years ago I was shown a “card trick” move by Ian Rowland that appealed hugely. It was deliciously clever, and so simple it could never be described as a “sleight”. However, I don’t use playing cards and, although the move is deceptively simple and utterly hidden, I could not think of a way to incorporate it in an effect – boy, that was disappointing. I held onto it for years, and mulled it over on numerous occasions. I knew there must be some way of using it, but nothing came.
However, Paul Brook has produced a superb multi-layered effect with “It’s Your Choice” that utilises exactly that clever little move. Applying his renowned creative thinking to it, he has created an effect that is not only brilliant in its own right, but can be applied and modified to exactly meet the requirements of the client. One move. A host of subtleties from which to choose. Only requires four blank cards... But add to this a few incorporated hidden persuaders and pseudo-psychological explanations – of which there is a plethora of examples – it leaves the participant with the realisation that their choice from four options was the only one their subconscious would allow them to make; something you knew before the process even began. Moreover, once the reader grasps the structure of these “hidden persuaders” it opens up hundreds of possibilities for the performer to modify the delivery to meet their performing style, whatever that might be. So, four blank cards, a marker (or two different coloured markers – nice touch) and this book. It’s going to keep you busy, and smiling, for a long time. |

On Nov 22, 2021, Johnsypoppins wrote: That's a great question and one that isn't finalised fully yet. The non-limited edition will be slightly less in price, but there will be much less material inside. More importantly, for those who want to shortcut 'It's Your Choice' straight into their paid performances, you will miss out on the extremely commercial presentations. Also, the non-limited version will NOT be in physical format, only digital. So if you like to hold a book in your hands, it's probably best to grab the limited edition. The non-limited version will not be released until all 200 of the limited edition books have been sold. All buyers of the physical book will get this digital copy sent to them at no extra cost. Hope this helps? Cheers, Paul

I will offer my unasked for 2c here, as someone who has a bunch of experience in related publishing fields.
It always appears to be a good idea to make your offering as appealing as possible for your first customers. BUT if you do this by rendering your product incomplete (in the eyes of your future customers) you do yourself a great disservice. For all eternity, you have to explain why it's impossible for your future customers to get the real work. This happens often with Kickstarters, and often people end up offering the supposed "Exclusive" content to everybody, ****ing off their early customers. I would suggest finding *additional* unrelated material to give as freebies for your hard cover / limited edition customers. Leaving out the "Extremely commercial presentations," seems like a recipe for sad future customers, IMO. |

This book will teach you a solid technique that will enable you to make money (and additional money from bespoke effect creation), while at the same time streamlining the process to save you time. As an aside, historically my limited edition books, tend to sell for more than the sale price...so it is literally a good investment

Hello Madison ,
I appreciate that you took the time to write your thoughts but for an in-depth review it seems to omit from answering so many questions that spring to mind . 1) Given the price tag of £150 did you consider this book value for money ? While as a performer having multiple presentations to choose from , what surely is key to value is the impact of the effect would have on spectator’s. So if a performer say performed B’Wave which is another 4 card effect , with 3 phases to a small group and then later Paul’s effect . Is the Group going to blown away by Paul’s effect and B’Wave forgotten ? With 7 times the price difference between the 2 effects , how of the value is in the choice of presentations to pick from and how much of the value in the actual impact on the audience? 2) If the group in the walk around ask later to see the effect again , can it be repeated ? 3) There is a card move used in the effect , how long would it take to learn and be comfortable using the sleight ? 4) Is misdirection required to cover the sleight or is it burn able by the group ? Regards Andrew |

You are paying for their time developing the routine, writing it up, and illustrating it. You are paying for their time even more than you are paying for their ideas. That said, I certainly feel this is on the higher end of the scale perhaps even over priced. 2) I would not repeat the same presentation. You could repeat another presentation but why would you? It’s not a simple four way multiple out if that’s what you’re getting at. 3) It uses a simple beginner card magic move. 4) The move is burnable. As for the b’wave debate, that comes down to the performer. I think most of the value in these presentations comes from the fact that each one creates interesting conversation and interactions that will be remembered long after the performance is over. I would say the premise and hook of these presentations will live in their memory far longer than the memory of b’wave. But this isn’t the type of effect that is going to absolutely blow their brains and melt their eyes. Madison |
