Calculated Thoughts is an excellent book, but definitely not for beginners.

OP, Bob Cassidy's "39 Steps to Mentalism" lists, with his comment, what are in his view the most important magic books to study to achieve mastery in mentalism. I believe it's available from lybrary.com for free (look in the "articles" section).

I think Peter Turner's How to Read Minds is good for beginners.

Ditto on Osterlind, watching him is what got me interested in Mentalism.

I think performing mentalism and doing readings are two very separate things.

For readings genuinely learn a system and also learn something about counselling. Think about your ethics, what the effect is you want to have on people- readings are never taken as entertainment, even if given from a stage in an obviously entertainment setting. so there is a lot of responsibility there.

Mentalism wise, its a performance art, character and premise are improtatant, and developing a good repertoire of a few things you can get down reliably. Study widely, reading the classic books, pus Cassidy is important, then look at the various trick videos and lectures. Find a character that works for who you are, and perform in order to entertain and mystify with out it all being about you.

Hope that helps.
