Hello everybody,
I haven't been on here for several years, but unfortunately my magic coins were stolen years ago when we had a break in. I have a brass expanded shell for a set of Lassen chinese coins, with the hole in them. Does anybody have an idea where I can find any more of these? I would love to get a set of 4 again. EDIT: They are dollar sized, (not sure if there were others) |

I'm pretty sure his Chinese coins were custom made (probably by him). Since he's passed, I suspect they're not being made anymore.
That means your best bet is probably to find someone else who's selling one, though I imagine that will still be hard to track down. Good luck! |

Thanks! I remember he offered to sell me replacements but I needed to send the shell to him - never got around to it unfortunately.
Well if anyone has a set (with or w/o shell) I'm willing to purchase them. I would take 1 but would really like to get my hands on four. Thanks again. |

I followed his blog fairly closely and don't recall seeing any posts saying he was running low on his stock of those coins, and there weren't any lots of new coins of any type included in the estate auction, so it's possible there's still some inventory of them somewhere. |

Are Lassen’s brass chinese miracle enjoyment coins coated with lacquer?
I’m asking because I have a lassen chinese shell which has tarnished some and I’d like to try and match the patina, but I first need to understand why the ME coin doesn’t tarnish. |

That seems to confirm my suspicion that the coin was lacquered. I prefer the look because the coins no longer scream "prop!", and look more like circulated coins. So, if using a Quiver purse to introduce the gaffed coins at the beginning of a routine, the matching non-gaffed coins can poured from the Quiver at the end of the routine and they appear to be the same. |

Interesting.
I've got quite a few and don't think any of mine are laquered. |

Brass exposed to air wouldn’t retain a mirror-like shine unless it was coated with something. Boiling the coin in a water/baking soda solution removed whatever it was.
This is assuming we’re talking about the same mirror finish brass chinese coins. |

The two coins on the left appear to have patina (maybe it's due to the lens angle or lighting). The three coins on the right appear to have the mirror finish mine had before removing whatever protective coating was preventing oxidation.

No protective coating on these. Pretty sure most/all were cleaned up.
Being (fairly) non-abrasive, Nevr-Dull helps to preserve the mirror finish when removing oxidation. My best guess is that a 3rd party coated your coins. It doesn't seem to have been his default process. Capturing the true look of coins is a challenge. The slightest change in lighting can change everything about how they look. Quote:
