Saw the airing of T.H.E.M.: Totally Hidden Extreme Magic. Two half hour shows.
Great Bizarre Magic:
These are all the ones I can think of. It is a worthwhile program, which caters to the Reality Crowd viewers. A New Twist to the Magic on the line of David Blaine Street magic but the victims are set up to be amazed without knowing it was a magical effect or stunt. Smile you are on a hidden camera, being scared, stunned, shocked, and truly amazed.

Pretty darn entertaining...the head drop was the best.
Also got a kick out of the guy floating across the doorway...funny old gag. There will be a lot of carping...but it will be a must half hour as it plays out...nice and fast bits. Doug

I enjoyed it as well....
The presentations were a bit simplistic, due to the nature of the "hidden camera" theme, but in general they were fun. I'd watch it again.... Kevin |

I wish they didn't edit the program in "MTV" style. Some of the effects appear to layman as POST EDITED. Some of the illusions would have had a greater impact if shot with 1 take, no cuts. Some of my co-workers actually think some of the victims were in on the gag making the illusion less than powerful. I liked the show, and I hope I see more of this style of entertainment, but wish they would edit less.

For all of you out there who keep posting notes about THEM being disappointing, your opinions are not shared by the majority. AOL voted THEM as one of the top 5 television hits. See for yourself if you use AOL. http://aolsvc.aol.com/entertainment/tv/top5/top5_main.adp

Is it not a shame that magicians are less capable of enjoying a magic show?

I thought it was a good show, and hope we can see more of it.

Anything that keeps the art of magic in front of the vast wasteland that's TV is considered positive. Only when fresh imaginations are fired up by something inspiring and challenging will magic continue to evolve as an art form.
Nothing is truer than the incomprehensible, because the sum total of our knowledge consists of the fact that we know nothing. Our reality is an illusion. Thus illusion is reality-Punx

I didn't like this show. I found it rather boring. I wish them all success though, and hope they pull of something more entertaining.
One negative thing was that there were more commercials than actual magic.

The magic wasn't too bad, and the laymen I've talked to enjoyed it, but most saw it as a version of "Scare Tactics" (another hidden camera show) where the gaff isn't tipped.
I enjoyed it, but didn't find it particularly entertaining. They've got to resist the verbal "I'm one of them" gag after every bit. It got old, fast. |

This show was really quite good - though some of it had the made-for-tv look that just didn't bode well for credibility.
I'm just trying to figure out where I can learn the colour changes that were done in the first clip. Anyone know who has published those?

Of course "Them" was first done in 1954!!! Ohhh...I meant the movie about the giant ants!!! (I still think Speilberg or somebody will re-make this with computer generated "ants"...so they can show thousands of 'em in this version!!!)
No...actually I LIKED the "T.H.E.M." show and hope they do more!!! It'll help promote magic...BUT (and this is a BIG but!!) all of us that do "resturaunt/strolling" type magic will be hearing "do you do that weird stuff like I saw on TV???" for a while now!!! More if this becomes a regular show!!! Of course I'll just tell people "no, that was to shock and scare people!! I just want to entertain and make you have fun!!!" So we can use this show to make ourselves look "better" anyway!!! Especially when we add that "I know how all that was done anyway..but this is what I do just to entertain families and kids!!!" Use the "weird 'n wild" stuff to make YOUR magic look more "G-rated" !!! A thought anyway!! |

I guess I won't hear any more complaints (not that I ever do!) about Jim Pace's "The Web"!

You could always have a 'Fly' handy (as in small zipper) or a bunch of them. Doug

I wonder about this...do we want magic (and bizarre magick in particular) to be thought of as buffoonery and annoying and nothing more than a bunch of yuck-yucks rather than mysterious and powerful?
People already for the most part hate card tricks and think of conventional magicians as to be avoided at all costs...do we want this for our element of the art? |

I don't know how magicians can be knocking this show or any parts of it, it really doesn't matter what negativity we throw at it. T.H.E.M. are on T.V., we're not. Somebody's doing something right!

I agree, however, who is the more successful? The person with a better performance, who performs locally and makes about a grand or two a year, or the person on T.V. performing for millions and making god knows how much money?
These are just my feelings, but I say the later. Jack |

Who cares? I guess if you want to put it on a scale like that, then we're not on the same subject. I don't rate magicians on their monetary success. Quite frankly, I think some of the best magicians in the world aren't making great money at it.
Take THEM for example. Their sleight of hand isn't all that impressive, their presentation is obviously inexperienced, and without the specific camera angles, it probably wouldn't look all that good. Therefore, I don't consider them very good magicians. They may be making more money, but that means nothing to the art. Van Gogh and Salvador Dali were artists who weren't rich or all that popular during their lives, but their works are timelessly successful. I think when considering one's talent as tool in the art of magic, you cannot simply go off monetary standards. -Christian
