On my last trip to Mexico, I picked up some beautifully illustrated playing cards. They have the suits of coins, cups, swords, and clubs. The pack also differs in that the cards number 1 through 7, and then skip to 10 (female dressed as a jack or knave), 11 (knight on horseback), and 12 (king). In total, a 40 card pack.
I would like to ask those of you who are familiar with these cards, including our friends in Mexico and Spain, for suggestions on using this particular deck. Thanks in advance, Vic

One thing I can tell you about them. They are subtle one-way backs. Even people who have grown up using these cards don't often know this.

Thanks, Jim. Now I sit here with the deck in hand, puzzling over the back design. My deck, the "Don Clemente Tradicional," has a back with a diamond pattern (much like Bee) border. In the center are two roosters' heads, opposite each other, surrounded by leaves, suns, and circular patterns.
Wait a minute! I think those diamond patterns create a one-way edge mark! Hmmm... PM me if I'm on the right track. Thanks, Vic

Heh. I remember once i walked into a magic shop with my deck of cards. The guy who worked there asked to see my cards and proceded to do a few flourishes with them. Then he said "Hey, these are nice. Are these spanish cards?" I then told him they were Longs Drugs brand cards i got for 50 cents a pack.

Hey Vic. That deck sounds like a deck very popular in Italy in a game called Scopa, but you were probably looking for magical suggestions right? At least it would be a good reason for you to always have one of these decks on you.
Hey, looking forward to your show this weekend! The wife and I are planning on heading up to see you and Scott!

What you have is a deck for playing L'Hombre the national game of Spain and one of the oldest card games still played today. You can find the rules here
http://www.pagat.com/lhombre/lhombre.html#Cards Traditionally there are no Queens or Female card as it is a game based upon war and women are not suppose to partake of theis "males only" activity. The face cards are therefor , page, Knight and King. As I specialize in Mediaeval and Renaissance themed presentations I have used these cards for my card stab routine as they look far more period than your standard bikes orf bees. A good source for some off-beat tricks with them is Stephen Minch's Book of Thoth from Hades Publications. It details several effects with Tarot cards.

Thank you, gentlemen, for sharing your knowledge. "Yak" you don't know what you're in for, coming to the comedy concert at The Tango Club in Homedale, Idaho! It's a little like "Bob's Country Bunker" in the Blues Brothers movie. Can you arrive a little early to help me set up some protective chicken wire? I don't want to get hit with any flying bottles or produce! (Actually, they love us there, and the owners are sweethearts. It's a sold-out show!) Stay tooned...
