Tenyo effects are amazing. They are so clever and imaginative. Unfortunately, they all look like something you got from a kid's magic kit.
Is there any that you'd actually use above the hobbyist level? |

Sand Frame, wooden (ala Mikame') or plastic. Each works well and neither looks like a "toy" item.

I would say WHATS NEXT, GORILLA BAR, and CRYSTAL TUBE are excellent for parlor/stage performances.

Unfortunately, most Tenyo seem to anchor themselves to tabled close-up. If that’s your medium, you have the litany if the Tenyo library at your fingertips.
However, for something like stand up-strolling, there’s a fraction of available options, and less that pack flat. To which, I’d recommend Dream Psychometry, Mysterious Pocket, Cubio, Tiny Rings. Maybe Mentalist’s Flashcards (I don’t have that one, but it seems like you could do phase 2 standing up). And MAYBE the new +1, Liar’s Fruit. At least, it seems like it could be done standing up going off the description. |

Another "Pro" level effect/routine is combining Tenyo's JUMBO SIDE TRACK with Don Alan's BIG DEAL.

For close-up, I am a big fan of Rabbit in Wallet. It is very hard to find these days.

I am thinking that THE FINAL PIECE will certainly be one which will be performed by many. It meets the requirements for a really good performance piece. No pun intended.

Someone did Zone Infinity (key through coin) on Fool Us in the last two years and it fooled them. How could they not have been aware of this item? Also it was done at our magic club meeting and people seemed impressed.
The noise it makes seems suitable for a metal passing through metal. |

Most kids' magic kits don't have items of the quality that Tenyo offers.
CRYSTAL CLEAVER slays young and old. I am only a hobbyist, however. To me, Tenyo tricks look no different than most magicians' props. To me there is little to no difference between a Tenyo trick and illusionists' props on a big stage -- we all know that they're trick props. The advantage of Tenyo is that they are relatively reasonably priced (when first released), and can be performed in intimate settings. They are engineered like stage illusions, but scaled down. One could argue that the most impressive tricks that look like real magic are the ones done with ordinary objects, like cards, coins, cigarettes, etc. Other props are fun to use, too, and isn't variety the spice of life? I probably wouldn't try to base your whole professional act on using Tenyo items, but there is certainly no harm in using 1 or 2 on occasion. Tenyo has lasted so long due to their clever designs, high-quality manufacture, and entertainment value. They leave most tricks found in kids' magic sets in the dust -- in the aforementioned attributes, and in really fooling the layman.

I have used What's Next and Tenyo's version of the Koornwinder Kar. I prefer the Tenyo car because it can be quote-unquote turned off and on.

I just wrote in another thread about Harry Lorayne's advice in THE MAGIC BOOK -- know your audience. I would certainly enjoy a presentation of just Tenyo tricks. In fact, I've seen youtube videos of performances of Tenyo tricks I already have that took the prop to another level. As with most magic, you don't need to stick to the instruction booklet. One of the many things I like about Tenyo tricks is that they can be pretty hard to figure out the secret. I'm pretty good at figuring out card tricks (after repeated viewings of a video), but the properties of a card deck are more or less finite. (Let's exclude gaffed decks for the moment.) What might be going on hidden inside a Tenyo trick is limited only by the imagination! On rare occasion where I figured out a Tenyo trick, building it myself was another thing entirely. I tried -- but was unsuccessful. I obviously don't have the means to build something of such high quality and precision. Now to be a "devil's advocate" -- isn't showing a Tenyo trick to anyone a "performance"?

However, think How much fun you would have creating one (or two or three etc. etc.) shows customized for your audience! This vaguely reminds me of performing from a Mr. Creepy Magic Set at one of our Ring Meetings sometime ago. Mr. Creepy was a magic set packaged at 3 different (I think) price points to kids. What made it fun for me was the tricks were fairly standard toy items, but each was uniquely designed to reflect some element of Halloween. Everyone enjoyed that meeting! It's not quite the same approach, but it is the same general principle. Spooky Julie
