I know that Derren is writting a book to follow his series but I can't seem to get any information on it. I don't know what it will include other than the fact that "it will be written for the general public and not magicicans".
I understand that I shouldn't be commenting on something that hasn't been published yet but with the amount of 'Pure effect' books on ebay, fans of Derren will buy anything. Dizzy |

I've heard of it. It'll be a self-help book along the lines of self-hypnosis, positive thinking etc. Al Koran and Maurice Fogel released similar titles in their heyday.
There won't be any exposure, from what I heard.. Ben |

Makes sense to me to cash in on his name. Paul Mckenna recently released one to. Although there is less of of connection to what Derren does to self help.
Im sure he will sell buckets full of them..Must be nice to be in that position! |

I like being fooled by him. If he keeps his secrets I won't mind.

And he's good at it, I confess... When I visited his website I clicked on the link to his "tips on how he does it" or something.
The pseudo-scientific explanations, the book recommendations... I was almost comlpletely taken in. He makes you forget he's a mentalist. It's thoroughly entertaining.

My point is?
My point is that I'm interested in a book that Derren is writting and I was wondering if any Derren fans knew anything about its content? However, I shall wait |

I'd love to have one more book by Derren Brown, but I'm still re-reading "Absolute Magic", particulary the essay that closes the book. Mr. Brown happens to be a brilliant theoritician, something rare to find. I need more time with "Absolute Magic". There are some essays in the Mystery School Book that ignited my thoughts in a similar manner, like the interview with Terrence McKenna. I will welcome any new book by these thinkers, anyway.

Thanks Curtis. I've always had such good advice
I got told at Lukes show last night that it is more of a 'self-help' reference book rather than a 'this is how someone would manipulate your behaviour to act or think like this'. Whatever the case maye I'm sure the book will be very sucessful |

I am a derren fan, of cool composure. I wouldn't chase him for his autograph (as some of my friends do!), but I quite respect his work. In fact there is soething I find immensely funny about derren. Why I talk to non-magician friends about derren's work, they almost all get mad at me for referring to it as magic. This has happened to me many times with different people. While this annoys me immensely when I want to convey some sense of wonder at magic and its myriad forms, and people who know little about the subject begin screaming at me...I also find it quite funny.
This means he has been succesful in his portrayal of what he does right? Just to clarify, it is clear to me that derren is a magician...The Devil's Picturebook comes to mind. He has taken Dunninger's life to heart and even picked up some of his unifinished (or unpolished) work and refreshed it (Telephone Book). He has also focused strongly on one 'type' of magic and experimented with his own mindreading (coldreading) abilities while performing tricks. I take this to heart....try a trick that has an out...but before using the out...try REALLY attempting something psychic (or if you prefer...lucky). You might learn some tricks from yourself. In short I respect this. To answer the original post... His recent video deals with magic as most of us know it. I plan on reading his other two books sometime (don't they contain exposures or new thinking on old tricks?). I hadn't heard about this new book, but I probably wouldn't buy it from the description given here. He has managed to stay on top of the telly magic game for a while...something many magicians fail at...ahem no names mentioned...especially in Britain...when coming from abroad...I think this is due to his trying to think in new directions (lol that's a bit out of order!). I would certainly enjoy reading a book solely (sp?) on mentalism theory as well as an exposé...self help maybe not (but he has built himself a market for it...evidenced by the angry fans I mentioned earlier)...and either way he's got to make a living. Can anyone here tell me more about Pure Effect and the other book? I take it from earlier posts they don't contain many tricks? M |

Thanks Dizzy,
I am still finding my way around this site...its difficult to keep up with all th threads I am following and still have time to find new sections. Anyway thanks again. M Grrr. I have followed your advice but the searches never return for me. The two minutes sign comes up, I make a cuppa, and then still nothing. I gues I should just skip it next time and instantly click HERE and try the second page. Next time I shall... M |

Ahem...thanks Tom. I thought the fact I posted about his video would reveal I know where to buy the stuff. I am looking for reviews of his first two books which I have not *yet* purchased. Specifically, are they theory or do they contain any routines?

Both books focus on theory. They do, however, contain routines, but the routines are used to animate his thinking, not for straight learning as with the usual magic book.

Thanks Mike. That's about what I want. I have yet to read a book completely on theory, but I think that time is coming....
