Looking for “classic” plain Okito coin box.
Getting hard to find this basic prop correctly made: • Okito’s intention was it appear an ordinary pill box • The bottom should be properly weighted • The lid should be an easy fit • Correct size to easily hold and dump coins • Brass, steel, copper, chrome Any suggestions that meet all these criteria? Thanks! (BTW: Kostya Kimlat’s Routine is killer) |

Craig Ousterling makes the finest boxes out there! Beautiful design. Heavy construction and the lid is lovely and loose. Here’s a little video I did comparing it to the M Box;

There are a lot of somewhat ambiguous terms there, "properly weighted", "correct size", etc.
It doesn't include anything the depth of the lid (one vs multiple coins), if it should be sized to take a turtle, or what type of coin you want. There are a ton of sources for a plain box. Tango, Buddha, etc. are solid choices, and then you can go up a ton in terms of pricing and design, depending on your desires and wallet. Jim Z. Copeland, Ousterling, and any number of other custom makers. But it might help to start with those cheaper ones - not because there's anything wrong with the manufacturers or quality, but to understand if and why they don't meet your requirements. If they do, they're a great place to begin for the price, and because pretty much any other box will work similarly. If not, then it would help to narrow down your options based on the requirements. |

I have both a plain unweighted one and one that does have a weighted bottom. I don't think that the weighting adds anything to the handling, and I did once have a spectator ask me why it was weighted. Both of those are brass and hard to keep clean; my favourite one is made of wood.

To my mind, the weight is primarily there so that it will correctly right itself when dropped in either orientation. If a box can't do that, it's not very useful, and anything listed above passes that bar.

The fine details are most often determined by your specific routine. Have you tried the o-kort-o routine as written?
Rim steal? Shake turnover? Three, four, more… Boston? etc. BTW looking for the old slim smooth version of the Hoo box here. Playing with later versions I found wall thickness, finish, and lid fit also matter.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Over the years, I’ve found various trinket boxes in gift shops and antique shops that work just fine. And, they look less like a special magic prop. As long as the sides are straight and the lid isn’t too tight, it’s easy to get them to work. While weighted boxes certainly allow for an effortlessly drop, usually proper finger position solves the problem.

I agree, a non-magic box found in a curio shop can be the very best bet, but one has not found me yet.
Thanks, the Jim Z has that clean simple look. I'll explore further, probably settle on 1/2 dollar. Thanks for the YouTube video! The box is lovely, but for me too lovely perhaps, I like that very plain look. Not my first rodeo for this, wish I had the tin pill box I had at 14 yrs old. Appreciate all your comments and leads! |

I am thinking that everyone would have a different opinion concerning the best box. It would depend on your own personal preferences and what you intend to do with it. Also, the look and feel and weight of the box should appeal to the user.
That being said, I have handled many coin boxes over more than four decades and although I like several of them for a variety of reasons, boxes made by Craig Ousterling just seem to be the very best. They look great, handle great, and work as they should IMO. He knows how to make coin boxes and understands what they need to be. Also, they remind me of something which could be used for a non magical purpose making them practical as opposed to a box which looks like nothing more than a magic prop. I suggest that someone new to coin boxes should handle a variety of boxes and see what they like the best. That may take some time because you have to get past the orientation stages first so you have a feel for a coin box in the first place. Then, you need to seek out a variety of boxes and have the opportunity to handle them. That can be difficult due to the lack of brick and mortar shops these days and even if you find one, they will not carry all of the brands/makers. Ousterling boxes have to be bought direct from him so you would need to find someone who has one and ask to handle it. Further, you need to decide what type of coin you want to use and which type of box will accomplish what you want to do with it. There is a standard Okito, a Boston, and a Slot. So, it is a process and cannot be rushed. Hope that helps! |

As other have said the Ousterling box is about the best, he'll make whatever you want in a box. But, as Jonathan T. mentioned, it depends on what routines or moves you'll be using it with.
If it's just turnover moves, or if you'll venture into Roth's rim steal.., that will make a difference. |

A Buddha Boston must have value. Years ago I had one with half dollars in my glovebox for practice at long stops.
My car was broken into. Items tossed everywhere in a search for ??? The half dollars were on the floor but the box was gone. Because it was a theft my insurance covered the broken window. So, there is magic!

I like the Roth style sets. I originally bought one from Tango, but the half dollar size did not fit an English penny. I ended up buying a Jim Zee Roth style set later which fits an English penny. Just something to keep in mind.
