Hi folks. I need to force a number from 4-12 inclusive for a trick I've been working on. Randomly asking for a number between 3 and 13 has no rationale. Any ideas welcomed.

You could use a pair of "elimination dice", each able to give any number from 2-6.
This would give you the required range of 4-12. The nice thing about this type of dice is they give different results each time - so seem very innocent. They are NOT loaded to always give the same result. I would recommend ordering some matching normal dice, which you can allow to be examined if anyone asks to see them. I have just ordered some from here - https://trick-dice.com/product/twice-dice/ This was the cheapest I could find [half the price of these - https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S17433 ] I will post a review when I receive them. PS. It's not 100% clear from the website, but I think you would need two of the "6" dice - i.e. an extra 6 instead of the 1. You definitely don't want the option described as "pair" which is a 1 dice and a 6 dice. This increases the odds of throwing a 7 - but means that 3 (2+1) is still a possibility. PPS. I ordered 3 sets of 1-6 [plus 3 regular dice]. I plan to use them for a brilliant effect by Jan Forster. |

There are many ways to achieve the range force that you want, but a bit of context would help.
The dice idea suggested by Nikodemus is a good one, though you can achieve the same result with an ordinary pair of dice. There are 36 possible combinations (counting duplicates) and only 3 of them total less than 4: 1&1, 1&2, 2&1. Therefore 11 times out 12 the total is what you want. To deal with the unwanted totals: 1&1: Tell them to put a dice in top of each other and add up the sides they see. 1&2: Tell them to add up the opposite sides of each die, ie the sides resting on the table. The total’ll be 11, of course. If you’re using cards, you can range force by openly withdrawing about 10/12 cards of values 2 to 6, have them shuffled the packet and let them draw two. |

I like both of the ideas with dice. Verbally giving such a small range would seem very unnatural to me, to restricting. So the dice make perfect sense.
It's never crowded on the extra mile....

You could get the job done with 3 regular dice. Give the dice to the spec and have them roll it. If it comes up with 3 ones (not very likely) tell them to roll again to make sure the dice are normal. Then you should be in the range you want to use. If the roll exceeds 12, tell the spec to eliminate one of the dice. Then use the remaining two dice, as they will always be within your range. Good luck!

Yes, the dice. It could work. Thank you all for your thoughtful responses! Sharing is caring.
